From its awe-inspiring cliffs to its extraordinary subterranean stalactite show caves, Cheddar Gorge & Caves holds many fascinating secrets about our prehistoric ancestors and is an international centre for caving and rock climbing. At 400ft deep and 3 miles long, England’s largest gorge with its spectacular pinnacles and beautiful caves (one is over 500,000 years old) offers visitors an exciting day out all year round.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a General Assistant to join our team at Cheddar Gorge and Caves on a permanent part-time basis. This compelling and diverse role would suit an individual who loves passionately communicating and sharing experiences, ensuring our guests have an enjoyable and unforgettable visit.

**What will this role entail?**

Reporting to the Assistant Operations Manager, you’ll be the first point of contact for our guests, correctly informing them of the activities on offer whilst ensuring that the site is clean and safe for guests, visitors and colleagues. The work is varied with elements of routine and reactiveness, working throughout all of the 3 operational departments at Cheddar including operations, retail (Gift Shop) and Food & Beverage (Café).

Key duties will include:

- To provide at all times the highest standard of service to customers in a polite, courteous and helpful manner.
- To ensure the highest standards of presentation and cleanliness throughout the premises.
- To have a good knowledge of Cheddar Gorge and Caves, its attractions and history.
- To provide guided tours and interpretation in the Caves and the Museum including fire lighting and flint knapping.
- To understand and have the ability to deliver food service safety compliance to the requirements of the Longleat food corporate policy.
- To assist with the rotation of stock, reporting any short-dated lines to the retail office.
- To operate the tills and be responsible for the security and accounting of all amounts of money handled during transactions in line with the cash handling procedure.

**What will I need to be considered for this vacancy?**
- Self-motivated with excellent customer service skills
- Experience of providing tours or sharing verbal information with groups of people
- Experience of communicating with the general public.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work outside in all weathers
- Knowledge of pre-history, geology, Victorian history
- Experience of till operation

You’ll be employed on a permanent minimum 35-hour per week contract, with additional hours available during peak periods, working 5 days out of 7, including weekends, evenings and bank holidays as required. The earliest start time is from 8 am, and the latest finish time is up to 8 pm, varying in accordance with opening times.
