**Job summary**:
We are looking for an experienced plaster technician to join our friendly outpatient team in the plaster room and fracture clinics, providing a comprehensive orthopaedic and trauma plaster service for UHB NHS Trust.

To advise and educate patients and their carers on all aspects of caring for their casts/splints and use of walking aids, in relation to their injury both with verbal and written information.

To give advice and information for patients seeking telephone advice and record where appropriate.

To attend wards and meet patients who are unfit to attend clinic for treatment.

**Main duties, tasks & skills required**:
Orthopaedic practitioners work in trauma and orthopaedic clinics. They may work with patients of all ages and conditions or they may specialise in, for example, children or older people

As an orthopaedic practitioner, you need to be:
confident and reassuring

able to deal with people who are upset

happy to be hands-on with patients

willing to work with messy materials

able to follow procedures

able to work quickly and carefully

able to work alone or in a team

You'll also need:
good manual (hand) skills

organisation skills

good communication skills

the ability to explain treatment to patients and to offer advice as appropriate

advise patients after the splint or cast has been fitted, sometimes over the phone

remove dressings and stitches from wounds

remove casts and splints

order supplies

update patients' records

**Qualifications**:
**Essential**:

- Hold the British Casting Certificate BOA/RCN/(SON)AOT
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development
- Specialist Post-Certificate Casting qualifications GCSE or equivalent Pass in English and Maths. NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social care or equivalent

**Desirable**:

- Degree/Diploma or equivalent.

**Experience**:
**Essential**:

- Minimum 2 years' experience working in a plaster room setting.
- Ability to read x rays correctly.
- Competent and experience of basic wound care including suture/staple removal, K wire removal, wound dressings etc.

**Additional Criteria**:
**Essential**:

- Competent IT skills
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Effectively prioritises, plans and manages own and other's activities/tasks
- Able to make safe and effective decisions relating to patient treatment when presenting with cast problems.
