- Key Tasks:

- 2.1 Provide written and verbal evidence-based, quality assured veterinary and epidemiological advice to Ministers, Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO), policy teams, administrative colleagues, field and laboratory staff, external stakeholders and similar including on risk assessment and risk management.
- 2.2 Lead the analytical epidemiology team as part of the National Emergency Epidemiology Group in exotic notifiable disease outbreaks and providing the analytical epidemiology outputs and challenge.
- 2.3 Provide a quality assurance/intelligent provider function for epidemiological advice to Defra and the Devolved Administrations (DAs) on animal health policy development and implementation.
- 2.4 Facilitate outbreak preparedness through participation in exercises and development of guidance and improved ways of working. Development of control strategies for dealing with outbreaks of notifiable diseases in liaison with Administrative and Legal colleagues, other Government Departments (including liaison with the devolved administrations) and stakeholders.
- 2.5 Provide scientific review of relevant evidence to assess quality, uncertainty and appropriateness for guiding policy and translation of complex science to policy briefings or reports.
- 2.6 Development and review technical profiles for exotic diseases and other commissioned work relating to the control of exotic diseases.
- 2.7 Provide advice from a technical perspective on the commissioning and progression of Defra funded scientific research projects.
- 2.8 Work with Field Epidemiologists in making decisions which require a deep understanding of veterinary epidemiology, including veterinary risk assessment and intervention epidemiology, recognising and resolving issues that require amendment of instructions or delivery of training.
- 2.9 Provide authoritative veterinary and technical epidemiology and risk evidence and advice to customers, colleagues, partners and important stakeholders on matters relating to the delivery of animal health and welfare policies, representing government with customers, partners and important stakeholders.
- 2.10 Provide veterinary epidemiological evidence and advice to inform and if required manage business change programmes and continual improvements in policy development and service delivery, ensuring important internal and external stakeholders identify with, and are engaged in any change process from the outset.
- 2.11 Act as the Lead Veterinary Advisor to the Veterinary Risk Group and deputy to the Chair as required.
- 2.12 Provide veterinary epidemiological advice for new and emerging animal-related threats and exotic disease development, including engagement at EU and international level.
- 2.13 Analyse, define and assess the risks evaluating their likely impact on disease spread and its control and provide advice and support to policy makers.
- 3. Essential Requirements:
- Veterinary degree confirming eligibility to practice as a Member or Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
- Post graduate qualification with a primary focus on epidemiology.

4. Desirable Requirements:
- Proven track record of strategic and tactical veterinary epidemiological leadership and decision making during incident and outbreak response, complex case work, contingency planning, and business continuity.
- Experience of translating quantitative and qualitative epidemiological information into advice for policy makers.
- Experience of writing scientific papers and/or reports.
- Experience in disease control programmes and/or monitoring of such programmes.
- Experience in exotic disease control operations.

5. Additional Requirements:

- 5.1 To take part in Duty Epidemiologists out-of-hours rota(s), including weekends and public holidays, to ensure provision of 7 day a week capability to provide epidemiological response to incidents and emergencies as required by the business.Reference
