SPANA - The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad is the global charity for working animals in low-income countries. Since 1923, we have supported the welfare of working animals, including donkeys, horses, camels and elephants, in communities that depend on working animals for water, transport, agriculture and their very survival. Today, we support working animals across 26 countries, through a series of global projects and partnerships.
- and middle-income countries, including working equids, bovids and camelids that support the livelihoods of numerous communities through their work in agriculture, transport and supply chains among others. Reporting to both the Veterinary Advisor and Senior Veterinary Advisor, this role will be responsible for supporting the delivery of SPANA’s global animal welfare strategy, providing technical expertise in working animal health and welfare, across a broad range of species. Providing essential technical support and advice to the communications and fundraising teams, global programmes department, and education teams will form a key component of this role, along with supporting the development of SPANA’s quality framework.

While we classify this role as hybrid, it's worth noting that the vast majority of your work can be done from the comfort of your own home. Occasional in-person visits to our London office (located in Borough High Street) will be necessary, but these will be limited to just a few times each year. In terms of flexible working, we're completely open to discussing how the 18 hours can best fit into your schedule.

**Key responsibilities**
- Supporting the delivery of quality veterinary care in SPANA associated projects, including the production of technical support tools and guidelines
- Supporting the fundraising, communication and supporter care teams by providing technical expertise and proofreading of appeals, newsletters, or social media content for technical accuracy.
- Working closely with colleagues within the global programmes teams to assist in the selection, planning, and implementation of SPANA programmes and partnerships by providing technical veterinary expertise.
- Supporting the education team with technical veterinary input for a competency framework and the creation of community training materials, that benefit the welfare of working animals globally.
- Technical monitoring, auditing, and support (including overseeing procurement where needed) to all global veterinary clinical and teaching projects (including mobile clinics, permanent centres and clinical skills centres).
- Supporting the integration of services for working animals within existing animal health systems, through promoting the collaboration of different agents in the animal health, laboratory, pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors.
- It should be noted that the job specification is not exhaustive and the remit may develop over time.

**About you**
- Qualified Veterinarian with a minimum of 3 years of clinical practice experience.
- Clinical experience in mixed practice, experience in bovines and camelids is desirable.
- Further qualifications in animal welfare, epidemiology or One Health is desirable.
- Strong interest in One Health concepts and community-level interventions.
- Understanding of the role and socioeconomic importance of working animals in low-income communities.
- Experience of working or living in low-income countries and for welfare/humanitarian/development NGOs is highly desirable.
- Experience of monitoring and further developing technical standards in veterinary medicine.
- Experience of communicating and working with other stakeholders collaboratively.
- Ability to be a strong team player with an empowering and collaborative working style, excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as strong cultural sensitivity.
- Interest in epidemiology, heard health, preventive medicine and disease surveillance.
- High level of fluency in English (written and spoken). Basic level of French or Arabic is desirable.
- Ability and willingness to travel to overseas projects independently as well as to SPANA’s head office in London as required.
