- Research Institute- NATA- Research Institute / Unit InformationThe Medical Research Council (MRC), as part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), has invested £30m over 4 years through the Strategic Priorities Fund to establish a Nucleic Acid Therapy Accelerator (NATA) that will support state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research to solve critical issues in nucleic acid drug development, through focused NATA research challenges and a NATA infrastructure hub.- Band- MRC - 5- Location- London- Salary- £27,600 - £29,325 (plus inner London weighting £5128.85)- Contract Type- Fixed Term- Job Type- Science- Full Time / Part Time- Full Time- Contract Length- 23 Months- Job DescriptionWe are seeking to appoint a highly enthusiastic research assistant to work on a collaborative project between NATA and University College London (UCL) as part of the UK Platform for Nucleic Acid Therapeutics for Rare Disease (UpNAT) - one of the newly funded MRC Rare Disease Research Platform Nodes. The project is focussed on developing personalized antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) therapies for paediatric rare neurodegenerative disorders.

**Responsibilities include**:

- Undertake laboratory experiments as required by the project. Carry out target validation and efficacy assessment (using both mRNA/protein quantification methods) and analyse/report data (verbal and written report)
- Update the NATA and UCL co-supervisors in a timely manner on results and provide regular research updates.
- Prepare data for publication, dissemination of research and for presentations at internal meetings at NATA, UCL and external meetings with collaborators.
- Take a proactive approach to learning and implementing new techniques and approaches
- Keep excellent scientific records and implement databases
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with the host institution’s regulations as appropriate.
- Troubleshoot and maintain procedures and instrumentation as required
- Maintain a good knowledge of the relevant literature and of the wider field and actively promote this to the group
- Effectively manage resources
- Contribute to the overall activities of the joint research programme between NATA and UCL as required.

The postholder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the co-supervisors.
- Person Specification**Essential selection criteria**
- Hold a relevant degree in Biology or related field
- Experience of working in a laboratory, preferably translational and related to Nucleic Acid Therapeutics
- Expertise in tissue culture including culture of cells with different characteristics, primary cells, cell lines and genetically engineered cell lines
- Experience in cell-based screening assays such as ELISA, luciferase, fluorescence and Western blotting
- Experience in primer design and RT-PCR/qPCR protocols
- Experience in high throughput cell-based screening assays
- Experience with Nucleic Acid technologies including antisense and RNA interference is highly desirable
- Fundamental knowledge in gene transcription, protein translation, RNA splicing and the regulation of gene expression
- Experience in data analysis and interpretation
- Computer literacy is essential for the analysis, recording and communication of results
- Ability to manage resources
- Ability to analyse data
- Demonstrate ability to write scientifically
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Capable of critical thinking
- Working and adhering to standard operating procedures and experience of process analysis and refinement

**Desirable selection criteria**
- Experience of the analysis of oligonucleotides; quantification, localization, protein interactions
- Experience of large data set analysis
- Experience of confocal microscopy and image analysis
- Experience of database management
