**Psychotherapist for Young People with Criminal Convictions from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds**

**Belong provides hope, rehabilitation and recovery for victims and perpetrators of crime. We deliver mentoring, restorative justice and psychotherapy **interventions, in UK prisons and communities.**

We have partnered with East England Probation to launch **_Me Time,_** a new service for young people with criminal convictions from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, which aims to improve wellbeing and reduce re-offending amongst participants. Me Time will offer short and medium term, culturally relevant, one-to-one psychotherapy to young people aged under 25 years, serving sentences at HMP The Mount or under probation supervision in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

This position provides an exciting opportunity for a reliable, organised, energetic, qualified psychotherapist to join Belong's committed, specialist team. The successful applicant will have at least two years’ experience of facilitating psychotherapy within the youth justice sector, the prison service or a related sector. They will deliver one to one psychotherapy support to young people accessing Me Time at HMP The Mount, Hertfordshire Probation Unit, Bedfordshire Probation Unit, or remotely. Psychotherapy interventions will enable young people to work towards positive, crime free, futures.

**Place of work**: HMP The Mount, Hertfordshire or Bedfordshire Probation Unit, and remotely from home, depending on participant locations.

**Hours of work: 14** hours per week, including occasional evening and weekend work

**Pay scale**: 33,700k per annum pro rata

**Reports to**: Head of Programmes

**DBS Vetting Required**: Enhanced

**Responsibilities**
- Provide specialist one to one psychotherapy interventions, as part of the Me Time service to young people with criminal convictions from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.
- Through psychotherapy sessions, support participants to improve their wellbeing and to identify and tackle issues related to their offending behaviour e.g. relationship problems, substance misuse issues, adverse childhood experiences and racial trauma.
- Model and encourage the use of non - verbal, creative methods e.g. visual arts, movement and writing as part of psychotherapy sessions to enable young people to express their thoughts and feelings.
- Integrate several approaches to psychotherapy including psychodynamic and psycho-educational models and if appropriate, a mentalization - based approach in order to meet the complex needs of young people who have committed offences and are from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.
- Manage difficult and demanding clinical situations including exploring complex, sensitive and disturbing personal issues in one to one contexts with young people.
- Plan interventions in conjunction with young people and with Belong's management, ensuring regular updates to young people’s risk and needs assessments.
- Assess young people’s mental state and identify any significant risk factors and to collaboratively undertake and contribute to risk assessments with other professionals.
- Actively encourage young people’s involvement in service development.
- Maintain excellent working relationships and communicate effectively with other members of Belong’s team, as well as with key stakeholders such as young people's probation practitioners and potential funders.
- Actively participate in relevant meetings e.g. team meetings, line management meetings, clinical supervision meetings, service reviews with young people.
- Ensure that young people’s records and any art work produced are adequately stored and, if necessary, transported in line with Belong, Prison and Probation Service, and HCPC guidelines.
- Carry out administrative and evaluation tasks as required for the sustainability and smooth running of the service.
- Exert physical effort in moving equipment and furniture, e.g. when setting up a room for one to one work.
- Maintain registration with the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and adhere to and implement the professional standards and policies of Belong, the Prison and Probation Service and the HCPC.
- Keep abreast of new developments and research in Psychotherapy and Forensic Psychotherapy.
- Adhere to Belong’s Code of Conduct and all of its policies, inlcuding on Covid-19 Secure Working, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Children, Anti - Corruption, Anti - Bribery,Complaints and Comments, Confidentiality and Single Equality.
