**Job summary**:
We are seeking an SSO to join the Expert Advice Team, in the Chief Scientific Adviser’s Office (CSAO).

This is an exciting opportunity to support the CSA in his ambition to ensure science is at the heart of Defra policy making, bringing in external expertise within priority areas.

Working in a small team (comprising of G7, two SSOs, and two HSOs) the post holder will cover a wide variety of work, in a fast pace environment working with a high degree of autonomy.

We are looking for a confident individual with strong planning and leadership skills. A strong communicator (written and oral) as well as collaborating and partnering skills, with a good eye for detail.

**Job description**:

- Provide a strong Secretariat service to the Science Advisory Council (SAC), a Defra non departmental public body comprising of external academics. You will take the lead, with the support of others in the team, to help ensure the SAC provide relevant scientific advice and guidance to the CSA, in doing so you would work directly with the SAC Chair and the CSA on agenda setting and future work planning.
- Ensure that minutes and reports are published in a timely manner
- requiring good attention to detail and the ability to translate science for non science audiences.
- Help to ensure that the SAC’s establishment, management, openness and transparency policy as well as its conduct and relationship with Defra is in line with best principles. You will also work with the team to ensure positive promotion of the SAC looking at innovative approaches.
- Help provide oversight of Defra’s science expert committees and you will have the opportunity to improve the way that committees within Defra function.
- Provide an “advisory service” to colleagues across Defra and on occasions across government, to those who are managing evidence committees. This is about collaboration and advising on the management of the scientific advisory committee structure and the associated Chair and member appointment and governance processes.
- As required, Ministerial briefings and submissions as well as managing Freedom of Information requests.
- High level management of the SAC budget and consideration of spending impacts whilst identifying ways to continuously improve - this will include keeping in tune with Central Science Division's budget as a whole and input into wider budget issues.
- As part of the team stand up adhoc priority expert groups, working at pace.

- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), proficient at engaging with science and non-science colleagues.
- Ability to communicate technical information to a non-specialist audience.
- Excellent writing skills and/ or experience in copy editing.

- Ability to manage people and projects.
