This role would suit a professionally registered nurse, operating department practitioner, healthcare scientist or other allied healthcare professional with a strong experiential background in the use of medical devices in healthcare delivery and a good understanding of medical device issues from the perspectives of clinical colleagues, patients and carers. The post holder should have demonstrable passion for quality and safety in healthcare provision.

The Clinical Engineering department, part of the wider Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering service, is one of the largest in the country, offering a diverse range of medical device related services both to the Trust and external customers. It has collaborative links within the medical device industry, with academia and with other healthcare providers.

The department is actively involved in clinical research, medical device development, technology transfer and specialist consultancy - as well as providing the comprehensive medical technology management, clinical training and safety management services fundamental to the delivery of healthcare by the Trust. This post is based within the Medical Devices Specialist Services section, comprising a multi-disciplinary team of experienced healthcare scientists/ engineers, technologists and nurses that offers a diverse range of medical device related services, including those provided by the Medical Devices Clinical Support Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a key member of Clinical Engineering's Medical Devices Clinical Support Unit (MDCSU) the post holder will play an essential role in the development, implementation and continued improvement of comprehensive systems of competency management that consistently ensure safe and optimal use of medical devices throughout Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Principal duties will include needs assessment, planning and delivery of competency-based training - together with the associated appraisal, authorisation and competency registration of medical device users and local trainers / assessors. The post holder will also be involved in the management of other approved training providers.

As a Medical Devices Specialist the post holder will additionally be a source of authoritative advice for clinical, technical and managerial staff on medical device usage, upkeep and safety issues. They may also support strategic planning, product evaluation, safety action and incident investigation activities relating to medical devices.

The Medical Devices Clinical Support Unit is a principal component of Clinical Engineering's multi-disciplinary integrated medical devices safety service, offering a broad range of expert support across and beyond the Trust. Corporately, the MDCSU plays a leading role in the functioning of the Trust's Medical Devices Competency & Training Group, which reports to the Medical Devices Management Committee.

**Qualifications**:
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse/Registered ODP or equivalent alternative relevent healthcare professional registration

Desirable criteria
- Teaching & assessment qualification (eg: City & Guilds 7300, English National Board ENB997/998, etc.)

Experience

Essential criteria
- Significant level of post-registration experience
- Experience of relevant healthcare specialties
- Recent experience in acute healthcare setting
- Sound working knowledge of relevant healthcare standards and best practices
- Significant experience in the use of a range of medical devices

Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of competency-based training planning and delivery
- Medical device coordinator responsibilities
- Risk/safety management and incident investigation experience

Communication & Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
- Excellent communication and people skills; ability to engage with staff of varying levels and professions
- Able to deliver training to groups of professional staff on medical devices and their safe clinical use
