**Job summary**:
We are looking for a Band 4 Medical Secretary to be based in the Faster Diagnostic service - Non specific symptom urgent cancer pathway. As a medical secretary you will be helping our patients across their whole journey within the trust from when they are first referred to our service until their discharge. This is a rewarding and exciting opportunity to join a fast paced team working in one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK.

This is an exciting role that involves working closely with a number of specialities to enable us to efficiently accept and treat GP referrals. We pride ourselves on offering the very best care to patients from across Birmingham and Solihull and we are looking for someone with a positive can-do attitude to fill this challenging but rewarding role.

By assisting our Consultant Physician, CNS team and Patient Care coordinator with their administrative workload as their Medical Secretary you will enable them to fully focus on their clinical commitment to their patients whilst ensuring that their time is filled efficiently in order for them to provide the highest level of service to our patients.

**Main duties, tasks & skills required**:
Main duties of the job
- To provide a complete confidential medical secretarial service for the Consultant(s). To be responsible for the organisation of meetings, agendas and minutes.
- To provide and receive complex information. To exercise initiative and judgement based on acquired knowledge and experience when dealing with enquiries. To provide a point of contact for GPs, patients/relatives/carers, who are often highly emotional and distressed ensuring that any language or other communication barriers are overcome.
- To touch type from audio and / or shorthand the following documents: clinical letters, results letters.
- To understand the patient pathway and provide information and reassurance in a professional manner. Deal with queries and instigate appropriate action.
- Knowledge and use of various Microsoft Office Software programmes including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
- To organise and maintain theatre schedule adding patients to lists and ensuring patients are seen for tests as appropriate.
- To manage, progress & chase results of patient investigations, prioritise and action according to clinical need. To develop and maintain an efficient filing system on behalf of the Consultant(s) to include correspondence, reports, results ect.

Good General Education (eg. GCSE English and Maths A-C) GCSE Level 9-4

Business Administration NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience in a clerical environment

AMSPAR Certificate/equivalent qualification or equivalent knowledge of medical terminology

Working knowledge of medical terminology

Experience of dealing with the Public/Customer service experience

Experience of working with a range of Microsoft Office packages (e.g. Word,Excel and Outlook)
