Antenatal and Newborn Screening Failsafe Officer

The post holder will provide support to the Antenatal and newborn screening managers for the Antenatal and Newborn Screening programmes, working within strict departmental and national procedures with responsibility for receiving, maintaining and providing manual and electronic data containing sensitive and confidential screening information.

The Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) Failsafe Officer supports the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Managers in the collation and entry of data for the Antenatal and Newborn Screening programmes, Infectious Diseases in Pregnancy, Downs Syndrome Screening and Fetal Anomaly Screening, Haemoglobinopathy Screening, Newborn Infant Physical examination, and Newborn Bloodspot Screening, BCG failsafe and also relevant vaccination programmes. The Failsafe Officer will identify screening coverage of the eligible population and ensure safety of the screening programmes. She/he will work closely with the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Manager to facilitate failsafe mechanisms to identify and also prevent missed screening opportunities and maintain an audit trail for all of the above mentioned screening programmes. The ANNB Failsafe Officer will also maintain and evolve mechanisms to collect cohort data for the key performance indicators (KPI), and for the National Screening Committee Annual Report for Antenatal and Newborn Screening, including the Congenital Anomalies Register (CAR) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) Quarterly data

Be responsible for providing and coordinating a comprehensive administration service to the specialist midwifery team

To communicate with service users using tact, discretion, compassion and initiative, and deal with matters that arise, directing queries as appropriate

Organise meetings, arranging venues, notices, refreshments, agenda, minute taking and action minutes

Type up relevant correspondence

Utilise significant personal initiative to deal with project issues on behalf of the responsible midwife, and process matters arising on a daily basis

Communicate complex information clearly and effectively

Collect data and information on an ad hoc and regular basis and prepare reports

Submit data to external organisations as required

Interrogate IT systems for relevant reports and results

Carry out and co-ordinate audit

Co-ordinate relevant mandatory staff training

Undertake ongoing project work

Set up and manage the maintenance of project and departmental files, in manual and electronic format

Contribute towards typing and archiving of maternity guidelines

Manage workload effectively in accordance with the priorities of the department

Contribute to the development of new systems and ways of working,

Participate in individual staff development reviews (appraisal) on an annual basis, undertaking all mandatory training as required and any additional training and development as agreed to keep up to date with the requirements of the job

The ANNB Failsafe Officer will be expected to communicate with other professionals involved in the screening process, to participate in the organisation of meetings, take minutes for the meetings, preparation of teaching materials and dissemination of performance management letters.

To provide project management support

Assistance with typing and archiving of maternity guidelines, audit reports and meeting records

Establishing and effectively managing screening databases for Antenatal and Newborn Screening ensuring that working procedures adhere to Data protection requirements of the IT systems used within the Trust.

Collating and inputting patient clinical and non-clinical data and screening outcome details onto the screening database, focusing on constant process improvement.

Manage NIPE systems and failsafe Newborn Blood spot systems.

Providing accurate and timely statistical screening data to the Screening Coordinators and other colleagues as required.
