The CAA is a critical partner in the delivery of the Future of Flight Plan. Our work in this sphere will impact not only the entire aviation ecosystem but has the potential to enable a paradigm shift in UK society at large. To deliver against this plan, the CAA has embarked on an ambitious programme of work, supported by our partners in government and industry, that encompasses many novel technical, social and infrastructure challenges.

**The Role**

The CAA is preparing policy, guidance, and regulation to for the safe introduction of eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-off and Landing) operations in the UK. The eVTOL, Technical Lead will act as the key focal point for eVTOL related technical workstreams within the CAA. As the Technical Lead you form a critical part of the team that is accountable for the design, development, and delivery of the CAA’s eVTOL technical roadmap.

The role will lead cross functional, multi-disciplinary teams to build the CAA’s understanding and knowledge and develop solutions to varied technical and regulatory challenges. Additionally, you will be responsible for delivering vital parts of the CAA’s strategic outcomes within the Future of Flight programme. The role also provides a unique opportunity to work alongside international governing bodies and thereby establish yourself as an international authority in eVTOL.

This role will be instrumental in helping to deliver the aims and objectives of the UKs Future of Flight Plan. If being part of this unique opportunity is exciting, we want to hear from you.

**Key Accountabilities**

You will be a key member of the programme governance team, participating in project control boards and governance meetings to ensure that the programmes objectives are met.

In this role, you will:

- Lead multi-disciplinary teams to deliver technical workstreams
- In conjunction with the Challenge Lead, act as a focal point for internal and external stakeholders on specific technical aspects of the eVTOL programme
- Manage, as part of the project control board, the delivery of elements of the budget that related to the delivery of the technical aspects of the programme, including the commissioning of academic research
- Lead in the design, development, and delivery of a strategic roadmap for the development of eVTOL and the processes and policy to support it
- Lead in risk analysis activity, including the deployment of tools and techniques that allow the CAA to better gauge the likely impacts of regulatory and technological change
- Assist in the definition of the technical capabilities required by the UK CAA and develop prioritization estimates to deliver against objectives and programme milestones
- Work with regulatory partners to develop a roadmap towards international harmonization of eVTOL certification criteria
- Represent the CAA, at conferences and forums globally, leading working groups both at a national and international level

**About You**

**Minimum Essential Experience**:

- Breadth of experience in the innovation and technology trends that will shape the future of aviation
- Demonstratable technical knowledge of (e)VTOL systems
- Broad experience in regulation, or an aviation specialism, such as airspace, airworthiness, air traffic management, flight operations, UAS, or another safety related industry
- Confidently lead and manage a diverse team in an ambiguous environment where there are currently few standards or regulations and where priorities can change
- Able to deliver complex projects and programmes
- Confident coach, mentor, and guide
- Degree level education or equivalent industry experience

**Desirable Experience**:

- Good understanding of at least one of the following: helicopter or fixed wing operations; airworthiness standards for commercial operations; Air Traffic Management
- A background in design and certification of new aviation technology/aircraft
- An understanding of lithium battery technology, associated risks and mitigations including energy management and monitoring
- Experience in liaising internationally to agree consensus on technical standards and understanding of bilateral agreements for mutual acceptance of technical standards
