The Palliative Medicine Training Programme is a four-year structured National (Scotland) programme with 17 trainees in total; 8 trainees in the West, 3 in the South-East and 3 each in the North and East regions. There are currently eight training units in the West region: Marie Curie Hospice Glasgow, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Strathcarron Hospice, St Andrew’s Hospice and the Ayrshire Hospice. The post-holder will be based, for a fixed term of 12 months, at the Marie Curie Hospice Glasgow.

The Marie Curie Hospice provides care across all settings to the population of the North East of Glasgow. Medical leadership is provided by 3 Consultants. Services include: a 18-bedded inpatient unit; Medical and nurse-led Outpatient Clinics, Day therapy unit and Community Palliative Care Team with dedicated Community Consultant.

During training the trainee will be allocated an Educational Supervisor. They will be expected to engage with e-Portfolio and pursue competencies as laid out in the Palliative Medicine Curriculum.

The post holder will play an important medical role in the delivery of care to inpatients, community and day-patients in collaboration with the medical director, consultants, medical colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team.

The role also involves participation in training and educational activities as well as activities relating to maintaining clinical excellence within the service. Management experience is available with the opportunity to develop an understanding of what is involved in running of a Specialist Palliative Care Unit and attendance at hospice governance groups.
