Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom NHS Scotland Full time

NHS Scotland is dedicated to promoting equality and diversity within our workforce while eliminating any form of unlawful discrimination. Our goal is to ensure that our workforce is truly representative, allowing every employee to feel valued and empowered to perform at their best. To achieve this, NHS Scotland encourages applications from all segments of society.

Two Consultant Positions in Palliative Medicine (WTE 10 PA including 2 SPA)

We are in search of two dedicated Consultants in Palliative Medicine to become integral members of a dynamic and committed multi-disciplinary specialist palliative care team.

Both positions will be stationed at the St Margaret of Scotland Hospice, with each consultant working on a rotational basis across three sessions at the Vale of Leven Hospital and the South Sector.

Currently, there are no established specialist palliative medicine services at the Vale of Leven Hospital. In response to identified needs, there is a strong commitment to develop and enhance the Specialist Palliative Care service in this area.

The proposed sessions at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital will integrate with the existing specialist palliative care team, which includes current consultants, specialty doctors, clinical nurse specialists, specialist pharmacists, and administrative staff.

Within the Hospice, the Consultant in Palliative Medicine collaborates with various professionals, including those with a specialist interest in palliative care, locum hospice physicians, sessional GPs, advanced nurse practitioners, allied health professionals, clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and specialist pharmacists, to deliver a comprehensive and active rehabilitative palliative care service that will support the establishment of these new rotational roles.

Both the Hospice and the acute sector have an active program for undergraduate and postgraduate education in palliative care, with the undergraduate education coordinated for medical students through the University of Glasgow. The Hospice also maintains a formal teaching partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University - School of Health & Life Sciences.

There are opportunities to further develop skills in collaboration with researchers and postgraduate educators from nearby universities. Candidates with a suitable academic background may be eligible for an Honorary Academic appointment with Glasgow University.

The primary workplace will be St Margaret of Scotland Hospice, but there is potential for the new post holders to rotate through clinical and managerial roles across the NHS, Hospice, and Community settings. The post-holder will be employed under an NHS Consultant Contract alongside an Honorary Contract with St Margaret of Scotland Hospice.

Contractual Details

The contract for this position will be held by NHSGGC, reflecting established partnership arrangements that provide the post holder with NHS terms and conditions, including membership in the NHS pension scheme.

Candidates must possess full GMC Registration, a license to practice, and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should provide evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within six months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
