The Deputy Commercial Director supports the Business Unit Commercial Director and Business Unit SLT by supporting, overseeing & taking accountability for a commercial portfolio as part of the Private Sector business, implementing operational programmes that are aligned to the strategic objectives of the business. The role oversees Commercial activities, builds capability & is accountable for portfolio KPIs & business outcomes for part of the portfolio. Works closely with the Business Unit Commercial Director & business unit leadership providing Commercial operational expertise, strategic planning & counsel to the Commercial Director, Leads, develops & delivers the strategy & business plan for Commercial portfolio (typically covering small to medium sized commercial portfolios) working with leadership roles across the business to ensure adherence and consistency of policy, processes and procedures.

You’ll be responsible for:

- Supports the Commercial Director with agreeing project target profit plans and commercial strategy, ensuring robust management & improvements where possible reporting outcomes through the Cost Value Reconciliation (CVR) process. Advises on stretch targets and mitigation strategies throughout life cycle of project where appropriate.
- supports the overall delivery of strategy, objectives & all projects for a Commercial portfolio (typically covering small to medium sized commercial portfolios) in the Construction business, in line with overall Mace strategy and priorities.
- Supports the delivery of annual financial and operating targets for a Construction commercial portfolio unit (including KPIs, OKDs & business outcomes), leads effective cost management, ensuring budgets are met and utilises data & analysis to drive continuous business improvements. Monitors progress on Commercial portfolio objectives & deliverables.
- Accountable for ensuring cash collection and receivables are managed in accordance with Executive Board KPI’s and that our Surveyors and Credit Controllers are in unison to maximise the organisations net cash position at all times.
- Drives the implementation of stringent risk management procedures throughout pre-qualification/bid management and operational delivery ensuring that the business eliminates, mitigates or manages risk appropriately with go/no go discipline.
- Oversees in conjunction with the Legal department all contractual/contract implementation with clients and subcontractors. Ensures any contractual documentation and dispute resolution is implemented in a timely fashion to reflect the interests of the business its culture. Highlights any contractual disputes that cause potential risk to business performance to the Managing Director and Group Board Commercial Director.
- Leads the implementation of all commercial and financial reporting processes and procedures as an integral part of the Mace Quality Management Plan. Ensures the financial systems are being accurately populated and information between surveyor and accountants is coordinated.
- Partners with Procurement / Supply Chain Team to agree and implement approved subcontractor/supplier lists and continued measurement of their ongoing performance. Deploys commercial resource effectively and ensures continual development of talent.
- Is accountable for providing oversight of the bid management/commercial process ensuring tenders are effectively managed and information provided to the Board to make informed decision as to winning work. Is responsible for the accuracy of the tendered prime cost at bid stage re scope etc.
- Provides oversight of reviews and analyses financial performance including conducting periodic financial reviews of all projects to track performance against key profitability, cash flow and other KPI’s & metrics. Leads in house reviews of latest legal/contractual legislation and implementation.
- Demonstrates ‘good organisation citizenship’ by working in an enterprise-wide way. Champions & drives the strategic implementation of enterprise-wide (& construct/business unit) strategic priorities, initiatives & transformational change, providing enterprise-wide leadership.
- Leads Commercial portfolio/unit by example, setting & working by high standards, leads, guides & provides direction to business unit/sector, ensures a high performing portfolio & teams that meet & exceed KPIs
