UK Defence and Security Exports (UK DSE) within DIT supports the defence, security and cyber sectors. These are strategically important sectors that contribute significantly to our exports, national prosperity and inward investment - plus are fundamental to the UK’s national security and our wider diplomatic and economic interests around the world. Customers in the defence sector are exclusively other Governments so HMG support is a fundamental component of successful export campaigns. Overseas customers often view procurement of UK equipment as part of a wider bilateral relationship - and the topic regularly occupies discussion time at the most senior levels.**The role**:
You would be joining the organisation as an Assistant Head responsible for overseeing all DIT-led defence, cyber and security export activity across your defined geographic area. Fundamentally, you would ensure that industry receives the support from government necessary to succeed in export campaigns.
- This would require leading a team of individual SEO and HEO desk officers each responsible for specific markets and delivering relevant campaigns. Working with military / security advisers, the Whitehall defence and security community, UK industry and across our diplomatic networks, you will have a high degree of autonomy and personal responsibility to drive exports across your region with significant long-term strategic importance to the UK.
- We are advertising specifically for someone to lead activity across Southern Europe. However, there may be other roles covering different geographic areas in the future.
- This high-profile role offers a unique opportunity to simultaneously lead on strands of HMG’s trade and prosperity, defence and security, and diplomatic agendas. It will provide the role holder with the opportunity to develop broad networks for skills and career growth in any of these areas.**Job description**:

- As Assistant Head, you will be responsible for:
- Leading defence export activity across a defined geographic area. This will involve identifying themes, drivers and motivations across different markets. It will also require spotting interdependencies between different campaigns and taking appropriate action.
- Managing a team of Desk Officers delivering multiple defence export campaigns. This will involve ensuring they provide strong campaign project management, are working effectively with stakeholders and are delivering quality activity (e.g. overseas visits).
- Working with colleagues across government. Locally, this will involve other Assistant Heads and their Desk Officers. Beyond that, you will be required to work with colleagues in the Ministry of Defence; Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office; and Cabinet Office. Plus, with Embassies and High Commissions across the world.
- Working with senior figures across industry. This will involve building commercial awareness - including of drivers, terminology and ways of working. It will also require regularly representing HMG to a senior external audience - including attending exhibitions and trade missions, both in the UK and overseas.
- Providing written and oral briefings for ministers and senior officials, and ensuring the quality of those produced by your team.

**Hybrid working**

The role will be based in London.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. As this is in London you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
