Empowering the wider workforce in the NHS to harness the power of genomics is one of the biggest challenges but also biggest areas of potential for the NHS GMS. Not all healthcare professionals need to become genomic experts, but the workforce will need sufficient, up-to-date knowledge of genomics in their field; and the skills and confidence to discern when testing may be relevant for their patients. This includes, how to request it; and how to have conversations with patients, their families and carers about their results and the choices they have and support they need.

Supporting the multi-professional workforce to use genomics safely, effectively, and efficiently is a core aim of the GMSAs. This includes not only increasing the awareness, capabilities, and capacity of the current workforce, but also the introduction of new sustainable workforce models to support the integration of genomics and its clinical utility in end-to-end clinical care pathways.

You will work in partnership with regional and national level colleagues at the Genomics Unit, GEP, NHSE and across our peer GLHs and GMSAs to develop coordinated plans to:
Work with workforce leads across the geography to understand the educational touchpoints along pathways of care where upskilling will be required across the multi-professional workforce and define associated competency frameworks

Undertake needs assessments across the East workforce, including the nursing, midwifery and pharmacy workforce

Working with Professional Leads such as nursing, pharmacy and medical leadership to design solutions and programmes of work to address gaps in genomic awareness, literacy, skills and expertise as required for their current and future roles in genomic testing and care pathways

Develop the East Genomics education and training function to offer a central hub for educational resources and available expertise to support initiatives across the geography and across the GMSA’s transformation projects

Work with the Genomics Education Programme to support the development and delivery of education and training opportunities and materials, with a commitment to providing equitable access to training across our geography

Provide technical expertise in the assessment of education and training initiatives and the measurement of outcomes and benefit
