Band 6 - Antenatal Clinic Midwife

To work as an experienced prime care provider in Antenatal Clinic, providing antenatal care to all. Practice, maintain and teach advanced clinical skills to appropriate staff groups e.g. student midwives and junior colleagues, whether in the maternity unit, birth centre or at home. This includes advanced life support, neonatal resuscitation, and appropriate to the clinical area dealing with complex obstetric cases, suturing, siting of I.V infusions and other procedures required in the care of high-risk women.

We provide services from two main hospitals, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital, and a number of clinics across London and the South-East.

Both hospitals provide full clinical services, including full maternity, emergency and children’s, in addition to a range of community-based services across London, such as award-winning sexual health and HIV clinics.

Our facilities are some of the best in the country. We have been investing around £10 million a year in our estate. We are currently spending £25 million on expanding our adult and neonatal critical care facilities at Chelsea and Westminster and redevelopment of our children’s unit at West Middlesex - in partnership with our charity, CW+ and generous donors.

Roles and responsibilities
- Work in partnership with the client, GP, obstetrician and other agencies to ensure optimum care.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of mothers and babies in accordance with the Trust’s policies and guidelines.
- Strive for continuity of care, continuity of carer and informed client choice within the limitations of the service.
- Facilitate the learning of midwifery skills through supervision, teaching and support.
- Actively promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle, advising and arranging support for women as required.
- Participate in educating parents in preparation for parenthood.
- Teach and support junior staff and students in developing competent skills and knowledge.
- Act as a Mentor student midwives.

Clinical Practice

- Facilitate the learning of midwifery skills through supporting /supervising students and junior medical staff.
- Support women in achieving a normal birth where possible by accommodating their needs and wishes and by empowering them and take responsibility for their care.
- Ensure quality standards are met.
- Interpret clinical findings and advise on the appropriate management pathway.
- Influence policy through setting, monitoring and reviewing standards and procedures within the clinical governance framework.

- Identify own development needs and actively work towards own professional development.
- Maintain a professional portfolio.
- Have an annual appraisal to agree objectives and a personal development plan.
- Uphold and maintain the Trusts values.
- Actively strive to ensure that you are fully up to date with policies and guidelines.
- Ensure systems are in place to ensure the safety and confidentiality of patients at all times.
