Band 7 Neurological Outliers Inpatient and Outpatient Team Lead Physiotherapist - Maternity Cover

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Neurological Physiotherapist to join our in-patient team and work with our neurological outlier patients at University Hospital Lewisham; a large acute NHS Trust with excellent transport links to central London. This post is for 12-month fixed term maternity leave cover.

We are a large and dynamic Physiotherapy department providing a high quality and effective in and out-patient service from our hospital site. We have a strong emphasis on staff development and learning with excellent support available to all bands. You will need to have had a broad range of neurological experience within both the acute and community settings, be an excellent team player, and have had a strong grounding in supervision and staff development.

We are part of the Centre of Excellence for Parkinson’s diseases and we have close links with our in-patient Stroke team and community colleagues.

The role will include leadership of the Physiotherapy Neurological Outliers Service, a large clinical caseload, clinical governance activity, as well as supervision and development of senior and junior physiotherapists, assistant staff and students working within the service. The post holder will also coordinate a rolling programme of audit and training within the pathway.

The post holder will need to have previous experience working with patients with a neurological diagnosis in both the in and out-patient setting. A commitment to development and quality improvement is essential.

The post holder will also be required to develop and maintain senior respiratory physiotherapy skills and competence and will be required to contribute to the on-call and emergency weekend physiotherapy rota.

Job Purpose
To lead a varied and mixed neurological outliers physiotherapy service of
assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of patients in the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The caseload will comprise of inpatient neurological outlier patients throughout the trust.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1) CLINICAL
1.1 To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your own work, including the management of patients in your care.

1.2 To undertake a comprehensive, and holistic, assessment of patients including those with complex presentations / multi-pathologies.

1.3 To use manual and other assessment techniques and clinical reasoning skills to provide an accurate diagnosis of patients' conditions and identify their problems.

1.4 To assess patients' understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.

1.5 To use clinical assessment and reasoning skills combined with a specialist knowledge and clinical experience of patho-physiology, evidence-based practice and treatment strategies to provide an effective treatment plan and goals in collaboration with the patient.

1.6 To evaluate patients' progress, re-assess and alter treatment programmes as required.

1.7 To formulate accurate prognoses and liaise with the multi-disciplinary team regarding discharge planning, where necessary, to ensure safe, timely and effective discharge from hospital, or following an outpatient episode of care.

1.8 To be responsible for the safe and competent use of gym, electrotherapy, manual handling and respiratory equipment, as well as the use of other aids and appliances by patients in your working area, ensuring that any Band 5&6 Physiotherapists and assistant staff attain competency prior to use.

1.9 To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with patients during assessment and treatment. To communicate appropriately at all times with all individuals in a respectful manner.
