Job description

24-month clinical research fellow post in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine and Sciences (SCMMS) at King’s College London. This post is for a motivated clinician to undertake original clinical research within the field of type 1 diabetes and renal/vascular complications.

The SCCMS has an international reputation for cardiovascular and renal research in diabetes with an active clinical research programme focussing on new interventions to treat diabetic kidney disease.

The postholder will work closely under the supervision of Dr Janaka Karalliedde (Principal Investigator), Clinical Reader in Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease and Consultant Diabetes Physician and other members of the research team.

The postholder will primarily be responsible for the implementation and execution of a 24-month Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) international grant focussed on clinical trial assessing the impact of SGLT-2 inhibitor treatment for people with type 1 diabetes and kidney disease on renal and cardiac MRI endpoints.

The trial will also aim to develop better understanding of the impact of ethnicity on type 1 diabetes related cardio-renal disease markers and their response to SGLT-2 inh treatment.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2025.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Key responsibilities

Develop the work programme for the research project in discussion with the project leads and others.

Work closely with the Principal Investigators to refine the project protocol and to be responsible for ensuring that the research components of the project are carried out in a timely and effective way.

Co-ordinate the work undertaken for the above research project and lead identification and recruitment of participants for clinical trial

Establish patient identification centres to aid recruitment with partners, through working closely with colleagues in the NHS

Liaise closely with colleagues in the research area including those working on their own and other projects.

Review relevant literature, including the synthesis and reporting on work carried out by others in related areas

Ensure that appropriate ethical clearance is obtained for all research activity

To adhere to GCP, local and national governance guidelines pertaining to clinical research

Oversee and lead on the preparation of research instruments

Oversee and lead on the collection and analysis of data

Write progress reports

Take the lead in drafting conference papers and papers for publication

Present findings to different audiences and attend relevant conferences

Conduct all aspects of designated research projects, including obtaining of regulatory approvals, patient recruitment, data collection and analysis, database management and dissemination of results

Collaborate with members of the research group and others within and external to KCL

Provide periodic updates to (and discuss project progress with) supervisors

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria
- Registered with GMC
- Medical degree
- Knowledge and experience of diabetes medicine
- Previous experience of clinical and/or basic research
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills; ability to work co-operatively within the group
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
- Self-motivated
- Ability to plan and prioritise workload
- Ability to work with mínimal supervision

Desirable criteria
