Materials Characterisation Laboratory Summer

Didcot, United Kingdom Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Full time

**Science and Technology Facilities Council**

**Salary**: £20,650
**Hours**: Full time
**Contract Type**: Fixed Term for 6-12 weeks
**Location**: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire
**Interviews**:The recruitment process involves a technical interview only that will take place virtually in April 2024
**Start**:Summer 2024

ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. We are a user facility supporting a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists. The ISIS Experimental Operations Division (IEOD) supports the operation of the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, including the support laboratories group.

The Support Laboratories Group support the work undertaken before, during and after ISIS experiments. The Materials Characterisation Laboratory provides preliminary measurements, sample screening before beam-time and complimentary measurements after ISIS beam-time. The laboratory conducts method development to improve the capability and capacity of the laboratory and its instruments providing a wide range of user measurements.

This project will give two summer placement students experience with X-ray diffraction based in materials characterisation, directly relating diffraction theory concepts such as Bragg’s Law with experimental techniques.

You will be able to follow the effects of these experimental techniques and the physical properties of the sample with your results. This will provide a unique opportunity to work semi-independently and acquire a solid grounding in crystallography, practical diffraction, and variable temperature measurements not usually attainable at undergraduate level. This in turn will advance your technical experimental ability in a materials science or other crystallography-related field. In addition, this will give you the opportunity to experience working in a professional laboratory environment.

ISIS has a great many users and staff that make use of the facilities within the Materials Characterisation Laboratory facility. Many of the measurements they make using the x-ray diffraction equipment involves variable temperatures, making empirical confirmation of expected temperature very important. Many of these measurements can also be improved through 2D detector modes, providing additional information about any preferred orientation and other discrepancies within the Debye rings. Improving on the methodology of these will enhance the ability of the MCL to support the user base, benefiting ISIS through improved sample throughput of the lab and better temperature validation for variable temperature measurements. This will improve effective lab capacity through higher sample throughput.

**Summer Placements at STFC**

STFC’s incredibly diverse range of placements allow you to work alongside world leading engineers, scientists, and technicians in highly collaborative environments. Whichever you choose, you will become a critical member of the team in which you will be exposed to exciting projects and challenges from the start. You will also be supported every step of the way by our dedicated Early Careers Development Team

STFC offers a benefits package crafted to provide an excellent work/life balance including flexible working hours, health promotion programmes, and subsidised restaurant and coffee outlets. For more information on our full list of benefits, please visit here:
**About the role**

This is an excellent opportunity in the field of materials characterisation to use and develop the skills that you have acquired at university, whilst learning many new ones along the way. The primary responsibilities will be to:

- Use Standard Reference Materials to provide calibrations and optimisations for powder diffraction with 2D detectors. This will involve converting the 2D images of the Debye rings to 1D profiles and comparing the results with the expected values from a Standard Reference Material
- Compare resolution and intensity between measurements on the single crystal diffractometer and the powder diffractometers
- Use the change of lattice parameters with respect to temperature and phase changes in materials to track the temperature in variable-temperature cells at the sample position. These will then be compared with the expected temperatures
- Compile a report based on the findings, to be used by lab staff and lab users to optimise their measurements. This will include calibration curves and comparisons with respect to known Standard Reference Materials

These roles will involve extensive laboratory time systematically exploring the settings require to obtain useable results while developing methods, and will give the students a good baseline for experimental crystallography and diffraction.

**Essential criteria**:

- Are in full time education at university, and will be returning to university/your studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
- Have t
