We are recruiting for a Health Physics Surveyor Apprentice to work at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire. Health Physics is essential support service to the operation of the ISIS Neutron and Muon Spallation Source.

You will be based in our Health Physics & Facility Safety Group where your daily duties will be varied and complemented by formal training with the National College for Nuclear (NCfN) at the Bridgewater & Taunton College, where you will complete a Level 2 Nuclear Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship.

The Health Physics & Facility Safety Group supports the radiation protection function and the radioactive waste service at ISIS. In the workplace you will develop the technical skills and competencies required to provide health physics monitoring support and assistance to staff and users at ISIS. You will also gain the knowledge and skills required for the safe characterisation and processing of radioactive waste prior to its safe disposal.

**About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities**

**You will gain knowledge and an understanding of**:

- The operation of a high energy proton accelerator and the scientific beamlines
- The principles of radiological safety including the As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principle
- The fundamental principles of radiation types, sources, hazards and appropriate control measures
- The purpose and limitations of different types of radiation monitoring instrumentation in order to measure, calculate and assess radiological conditions in the workplace
- The importance of keeping records of all monitoring activities (e.g. written reports, use of information technology (IT)
- The significance of relative STFC safety policies, legal requirements for the use and control of ionising radiations

**You will gain skills to enable you to**:

- Function test radiation monitoring instrumentation using calibrated radioactive sources
- Use specialist radiation monitoring instrumentation to monitor for:

- Surface and airborne radioactive contamination
- Radiation dose rates
- Personal radioactive contamination and how to respond accordingly
- Characterisation of radioactive waste
- Clearance of plant, equipment and samples
- Undertaking radiation related work activities safely and competently
- Use of overhead travelling cranes and forklift trucks
- Participate in emergency response arrangements to protect personnel, plant and the environment
- Communicate radiological protection information effectively, using a variety of communication methods in a timely, positive, challenging and professional manner.

**What qualifications will you obtain**:

- Level 2 Nuclear Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship (ST0290)
- Health Physics Monitoring in the Nuclear Industry (Theory) Level 2
- Level 2 NVQ in Radiation Protection
- IOSH Working Safely

**What do you need to consider?**

This is a three-year scheme. You will work normal office hours between 08:00 - 16:00 Monday to Thursday, 08:00 - 15:00 Friday. You will need to wear personal protective equipment, necessary for work in radiologically designated areas as and when required. As part of the role, you will occasionally need to wear respiratory protective equipment. This role provides an exciting opportunity to explore and experience various aspects of the RAL site and provides great science and engineering based experience.
