The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source situated at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is a world-leading research facility utilising an 800 MeV proton accelerator for producing intense pulses of neutrons and muons. Muons are generated by collisions between the proton beam and a carbon target. Utilizing the high-intensity muon beam, the ISIS Muon Group operates several pioneering muon spectrometers for studying a diverse range of materials on the atomic scale.

For condensed matter studies, positively charged muons are implanted into materials and the time-evolution of the muon spin polarisation is observed by measuring decay positrons. Muon instruments use experimental suites made of arrays of positron detectors and various kinds of experimental environment. The main mission of the ISIS Muon Group includes:

- Instrumental developments utilising the cutting edge technologies and computational tools,
- Experimental support for facility users from academia and industries
- Contribution to the development of user communities and younger generations through opportunities such as this.

**About the role**

You will work with scientists of the ISIS Muon Group to develop a new positron degrader for the EMU instrument. This device filters and selects positrons reaching the detectors according to energy, and selecting only high energy positrons brings a significant boost to data quality. To design this degrader, you will:

- Use the muon specific package ‘musrSim’ (based on the particle physics code GEANT4), to test different models for the degrader developed, in consultation with muon instrument scientists
- Collate the results after each set of simulations, presenting them in a way that can be visualised and that allows comparison of the performance of different models, summarising the outcome to scientists

**Essential criteria**:

- Are in full time education at university, and will be returning to university/your studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- A level (or equivalent) in a scientific or technical area
- Some experience of computer programming
- Ability to work and communicate as part of a team
- Problem solving ability
- Report writing skills and some familiarity with software such as Excel or Origin to summarise datasets
- Ability to work independently

**Desirable criteria**:

- Experience of running computer simulations
- Experience of working in a Linux/Unix-like operating system
