Together, our scientists, technologists, engineers, and business support teams explore the unknown and turn what they find into work that changes the world around us. Whether it’s discovering new materials, sending probes into space, or finding new ways to treat cancer, everyone here plays a vital role in making a positive difference to society.

Come and discover how much you can achieve when you’re surrounded by world-leading experts, encouraged to constantly learn, and empowered to explore your curiosity.

**About us**:
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a publicly funded organisation responsible for supporting, coordinating and promoting research, innovation and skills development. Our uniqueness lies in the breadth of our remit and the sheer diversity of our portfolio, as we harness our world-leading expertise, facilities and resources to drive science and technology forward.

ISIS is the world’s most productive spallation neutron source — providing beams of neutrons and muons to enable scientists to study the structure and properties of matter for the benefit of science and engineering in the UK and abroad. This role lies within the ISIS Experimental Operations Instrument Support group, who provide technical support to our beamlines and instruments at ISIS. Including providing machining support, mechanical maintenance and installation.

**Overview**:
Experimental Operations Division are looking for a CNC Machinist who is able to operate a milling machine with a 4 meter bed. This machine uses a Heidenhain controller with offline programming using Solid Edge CAM/CNC mill. You will have an active input into the development and progression of this manufacturing facility, ensuring it has the capability to provide the required manufacturing support and services now and for the future. In addition, when required you will work as a mechanical technician, installing/maintaining equipment on scientific beamlines. Working with other technicians supporting the continual improvement and running of ISIS.

**About the Role**:
Working in the Experimental Operations division, in this role, you will be required to manufacture a wide range of components using CNC machining methods and work to engineering drawings and verbal instructions. You will develop machining capabilities and work with a wide spectrum of materials including Steel, Aluminium, Stainless Steel, Super Alloys and composites. You will also involve yourself in general workshop duties such as hand finishing, and part identification in addition to maintaining your work area and adhering to all safety protocols.

As a mechanical technician you will be required to assemble mechanical systems to engineering drawings, install mechanical systems and assemblies to beamlines and instruments in a scientific environment and work safely and ensure the safety of others in a scientific and engineering environment.

You will have served a mechanical apprenticeship and will be an experienced machinist, vocationally trained and proficient with best practice techniques and conversant with a wide range of tooling. Familiarity and experience using various hand tools is also crucial.

ISIS operates four 50 day cycles per year, during these cycles ISIS operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week so some over time is required.
