Committed To Equal Opportunities

Overview

The School of Ocean Sciences (SOS), located on the Isle of Anglesey, is a multidisciplinary department with a focus on coastal and shelf sea sciences and a strong history of international research excellence and collaboration. Core research interests include oceanography, marine biology and ecology, aquaculture & fisheries, biogeochemistry and climate change science.

The Project

This project aims to investigate the impacts of climate change on the growth, mortality, and distribution patterns of the commercially important, data-poor stock of the common whelk (_Buccinum undatum) _to help ensure long-term socio-economic and environmental sustainability. This research is a collaboration between Bangor University, the British Geological Survey, the Welsh Fishermen’s Association and the Orkney Fisheries Association. Results from this project will inform fisheries management and contribute to the Whelk Management Group’s (WMG) objective of improving long-term environmental and economic sustainability. The information gained from this project falls alongside the current Fisheries Management Plan (FMP) for Defra and Fisheries Act (2020) through current goals of understanding future impacts of climate change. By understanding natural mortality and behavioural disruptions under different climate change scenarios and how regional variations in growth rates may alter, we can review the current the implementation of management mechanisms, to encompass and pre-empt potential disruptions to industry, to reduce the impact on social and environmental sustainability.
