This is a developmental role. To work towards becoming a competent Cardiac Physiologist/Healthcare Science Practitioner by successfully completing the Healthcare Science Practitioner (Physiological Sciences) BSc (Hons) over the course of 3 years, whilst simultaneously gaining practical work experience within the department.
- Perform ECG's to SCST standards
- Fitting ambulatory monitors of varying lengths (24hr - 7 day)
- Managing equipment and sending off for annual service or repair when necessary
- Assisting admin team and junior staff
- Form constructive and effective working relationships with patients and staff
- Instruct patients regarding tests and equipment in order to obtain best results
- Reassure, empathise and tactfully persuade patients, some of whom may have barriers to understanding
- Deal with angry or aggressive patients
- Train other staff in tests undertaken
- Deal with telephone queries from patients, staff and other departments and direct them to the appropriate person/department where necessary
- Promote a pleasant and efficient image with internal and external organisations
- To provide training and support for new staff and students
- To provide expert knowledge and training for other healthcare professionals as and when required
- To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the team
- Implement change when required and provide support for junior staff when changes are made
- To provide a high level of patient centred care
- Ensure the privacy and dignity of patients is maintained whilst investigations are carried out
- To be empathetic and understanding of patients and any anxieties or distress they may be under
- Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the line manager as part of the personal development process

The post holder will learn the duties of healthcare science assistants and after initial training will be performing ECG's within outpatient and inpatient settings and fitting/removing ambulatory heart/blood pressure monitors. As you progress through the BSc (Hons) you will train and work towards other clinical duties such as Echocardiography, Exercise testing, Pacemaker follow ups, heart rhythm analysis and working within the Cardiac Catheter Lab.

Apprenticeship
- The post-holder will be expected to complete a 3 year course for the BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science. Block release takes place at the University of the West of England, and travel and accommodation expenses will be met by the hospital. Should you leave before completion of the training then reimbursement of the costs will be expected.
- The post-holder will be expected to undergo a comprehensive in house assessment programme within the hospital as part of the Healthcare Science Degree and also in order to qualify for pay increments
