Work with the Phlebotomy manager to ensure the service is organised and staffed appropriately to deliver patients samples to the department in a timely manner. Responsible for the organisation of booking phlebotomy-training sessions. Organise effective and timely training programmes for staff employed both in UHP, NHS Trusts and other healthcare providers. Work with the Phlebotomy manager to ensure quality standards including, sampling technique, collection equipment, patient identification and Health & Safety are practiced according to departmental and Trust policies.

Work with the Phlebotomy Manager to ensure the service is organised and staffed appropriately to deliver patients samples to the department in a timely manner. Leading by example ensure that all those responsible to the post holder dress and act in a professional manner at all times. Deputise for the other supervisory staff in their absence. Maintain staff rotas, including weekend and Bank Holiday rotas.

Ensure the training of all Phlebotomy staff is effective and documented in their training logs, which will be reviewed on a regular basis. Ensure that all staff are appraised on an annual basis. To ensure that all staff meet the necessary standards of speed, quality and accuracy, appropriate to the level of experience and training within the Phlebotomy department. Ensure that staff for whom you are responsible receive induction and training as per departmental and Trust policy.

This includes ensuring contemporaneous completion of all induction and training records. Provide advice on the collection of specimens for the Laboratory Participate and contribute to the Departments programme of continuous service review in accordance with internal and external quality systems and within the Trusts framework of continuous quality improvement. This will include audit, corrective action, preventative action and improvement processes. Ensure the promotion, identification and implementation of efficiency measures within the section.

Work with technical leads in the other sections to ensure that any efficiency measures identified within the Department are implemented. To attend any training courses, as directed. These may be either Trust led or external to the Trust. To ensure stock control within the Section.

Ensure that these stock levels are maintained and that all storage areas are safe and tidy. To ensure the accurate maintenance of all records pertaining to the activities of the Section. Working with senior laboratory staff, including the Quality Manager, assist in the formulation of all standard operating procedures, protocols and policies within the section, and ensure that they are maintained, reviewed and updated when necessary. Assist in implementing any procedural changes required by the Departmental Manager and disseminate information relating to them.

Record and monitor staff sickness leave and undertake return to work interviews in accordance with current policy. Undertake basic HR functions within the areas of responsibility, including the recruitment and selection process. Ensure annual leave is granted in accordance with Departmental policy and there are sufficient staff at all times to provide the necessary standards of service provision. Support income generation initiatives within the section and the Department.

To be responsible for the adequacy of maintenance, repair, servicing and safety of all equipment within the section and record information as necessary Assist the Phlebotomy Manager in the establishment of a flexible approach to work requirements within the section that maximises the utilisation of equipment and responds to changing requirements of the users. Deputise for the Phlebotomy Manager & Deputy in their absence at all relevant meetings. Ensure that adequate communication channels are maintained to ensure the smooth operation of the phlebotomy service. To investigate complaints relating to the section and refer to the Phlebotomy Manager To provide a venepuncture service within the Trust in accordance with UHP and departmental policies and procedures.

To report as soon as possible to your line manager any problems that may arise. To liaise with patients, carers, nursing and medical staff in an appropriate and professional manner. Informing patients of the venepuncture procedure to be carried out in a caring reassuring manner that is aimed at their level of understanding. To undertake work for which they have been trained.

Following standard operating procedures dispose of used equipment in a safe manner, reducing risks of needle stick injury to yourself and others. Ensure that request forms for blood are correctly filled in with the minimum acceptance data present. Ensure that all samples collected are correctly labelled and meet the acceptance criteria for the Pathology department concerned. To identify bloods not taken to the ward clerk, or in their absence, the Nurse-in-charge on duty.
