London, United Kingdom Migrant Democracy Project Full time

Job description

Migrant Democracy Project (MDP) envisions a society where all migrants at home in the UK hold collective, political power to shape a society rooted in justice, freedom, and solidarity. A society where migrants’ interests and needs are heard, included and represented in all levels of UK politics.

We are looking for a full-time Organiser to engage and mobilise first-generation migrants in the UK towards this vision through democratic and community organising. The organiser’s work will connect across 3 streams: voter registration; advocacy & campaigns; and political empowerment.

Whether it’s engaging migrants at a voter registration stall, supporting migrant communities to organise in the electoral space, or strengthening a local campaign - the lived experience of first generation migrants is at the heart of all our activities.

We are looking for an experienced organiser who is passionate about migrants’ rights and democratic reform to** start working as soon as possible**.

We are looking for an organiser ideally based in London who can work full-time hours flexibly, including evening and weekend time where events require. When work is carried out by any Migrant Democracy Project employee outside normal working hours, time off in lieu is applied.

**Who funds the role?**

Migrant Democracy Project’s activities are funded by a number of philanthropic grants as well as donations. This Organiser role is funded by the Blagrave Trust and the Barrow Cadbury Trust.

**Contract**

This is a fixed term, 2-year, employee contract, including NI and 3% employer pension contribution. Funding for the role is secured for 2 years, until April 2026. MDP is constantly fundraising to be able to extend the role beyond April 2026 on a permanent basis. We are looking for an Organiser who is able to commit long-term to the role rather than on an interim basis.

**Location**

Migrant Democracy Project does not have a physical office. The Organiser will work flexibly from home on administrative tasks and be expected to work in-person when necessary to deliver voter registration, training, informative, advocacy and campaign activities, as well as representing MDP at relevant events.

**Vision for the role**

Migrant Democracy Project is building migrants’ political power in the UK. For that to happen, we need to register eligible migrants to vote, achieve the extension of the right to vote, take our migrants’ rights campaign to the democratic space, and elect more migrants into political office. We are currently training 10 first-generation migrants to stand as councillors in the future. The organiser will build the infrastructure and ecosystem for this vision to materialise.

**Responsibilities**
- Build and implement an organising strategy for MDP, working closely with the Co-Directors
- Identify and lead outreach activities with first-generation migrant communities where voter registration can be achieved
- Identify and train migrant community members to participate and shape MDP’s Our Home Our Vote campaign for the extension of the right to vote.
- Support the delivery of our MPower - Community Organising Programme empowering communities to best achieve their campaign aims by engaging in UK democracy
- Manage a stakeholder network including local and national migrants’ rights groups and keeping a contact database
- Lead on the co-production and dissemination of physical and digital materials on democratic rights and participation, such as production of leaflets and infographics in different languages and with different purposes.
- Collect and produce content for social media following activities delivered with the community.
- Seek media opportunities to communicate the organisation’s campaigns and policy positions. Act as a spokesperson for MDP and support migrant community members to engage with identified media opportunities
- Keep track of engagement and contribute reports for our projects’ evaluation
- Attend regular progress meetings with the Co-Directors

**Qualifications**

We are looking for a proactive, confident, flexible and well-organised person, with the following skills:

- Excellent knowledge of the UK political system, in particular of voter eligibility and the roles and responsibilities of elected representatives.
- Demonstrable experience in an Organiser role for a not-for-profit, political party or related organisation.
- Excellent and motivating verbal and written communication skills. You will be expected to speak in public, engage migrants on voting rights, communicate political and electoral topics engagingly and succinctly.
- Excellent administrative and planning skills, including dealing with last-minute changes to events.
- Knowledge of the UK immigration system and experience working with migrant communities, including campaign or support groups.
- Experience producing and posting content using a range of social media platforms, including X, Facebook, Instagram
