**Job summary**:
This is a stretching role working on high-profile and technical trade policy issues. Individuals will need to work collaboratively across government and DBT; effectively building networks and relations alongside policy and trade expertise on tariffs.

The exact portfolio of the role will be determined with government priorities in mind, but could include:

- **Applied Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariff policy - **Shaping and protecting the UK’s tariff policy which is an integral part of UK economic growth. This could also include balancing a range of domestic and international considerations as part of the Government’s work on tariff suspensions policy.
- **Multilateral Strategy**- **Rooted at the WTO and concerning cross-cutting international trade policy and negotiations, this work involves leading on aspects of goods policy including environmental goods.
- **WTO - **Helping to establish the UK as a fully independent member of the WTO and developing approaches to help deliver the UK’s agenda in the WTO. Leading on engagement at the WTO to pursue and resolve trade barriers impacting UK businesses.

This role requires a team player who can effectively support the delivery of a programme of work with multiple work strands, continually building capability and understanding of tariff policy.

**Job description**:
The responsibilities of the role may include:

- Engaging internationally and with domestic stakeholders to gather evidence and delivering DBT positions and policy with confidence.
- Working collaboratively across government and build working networks to understand and craft well-evidenced policy positions to support wider HMG priorities.
- Drafting submissions and advice for senior officials and Ministers.

**Essential criteria**
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate policy to a range of audiences.
- The ability to grasp complex issues, and use this to help develop policy.

**Desirable criteria**
- Knowledge or experience of trade policy.
- Experience of policy development or delivery.

**Personal attributes & skills**
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, able to persuade and influence others in a collaborative fashion, at different levels of seniority across government, including Ministers.
- Able to identify, evidence and analyse policy options to make sound judgements, drawing upon experts as appropriate.
- Be a team player with the ability to support work across the team to deliver team priorities.
