The Role
The John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre (JWMDRC) has a strong interest in research, diagnosis and management of neuromuscular genetic disease. We have secured funding including MRC funding under the International Centre for Genetic Medicine and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre grant to continue cutting edge genetic research utilising next generation sequencing technology to diagnosis patients with genetic neuromuscular diseases from local and international collaborative projects). The post would suit a molecular geneticist/biologist with an interest in neuromuscular disease and good administration and computer skills, although training, bio-informatics support and dedicated software will be provided. You will have the opportunity to undertake a PhD.
This is a full time, fixed term post available for 2 years.
As part of our commitment to career development for research colleagues, the University has developed 3 levels of research role profiles. These profiles set out firstly the generic competences and responsibilities expected of role holders at each level and secondly the general qualifications and experiences needed for entry at a particular level.
Key Accountabilities
Contribute to and actively participate in the management of collaborative research projects outlined above by:
Maintaining databases, cases records and genetic datasets
Providing a central contact for the distribution of information, material and data as required by project partners
Perform research under the guidance of the Project Leads, such as interpretation of next generation sequencing data
Provide data analysis as well as routine molecular biology to support the research activities of the JWMDRC. This may include some flexible working at weekends and working out of hours. A degree of flexibility is therefore required
Internal liaison with colleagues within the JWMDRC to explore areas of overlap such as common pathogenetic pathways between disease areas
Responsible for the development of novel techniques and protocols as required to extend the analyses as directed by the project leads
Working with other Newcastle University staff, extend areas of activity to complement existing basic research in neuromuscular disease
Internally responsible for many aspects of laboratory management including safety and data handling
Supervision and training of junior staff and students in general laboratory practice and in the specialized techniques applied to this project
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Experience working with large datasets
Experience of molecular biology techniques
Experience with biomedical research
Understanding of data protection and ethics in research
Understanding of theoretical aspects of the interpretation of next generation sequencing data
Publication in major journals and presentation of data at conferences
Experience in the rare disease field
Experience with biomarker research and biobanking
Experience with research in primary cell systems
Work with skeletal muscle
Attributes and Behaviour

Quick to learn new techniques
Good computer skills
Able to communicate effectively at all levels
Willingness to work outside normal hours
