London, United Kingdom Perrett Laver Full time

Thank you for your interest in the work of Moorfields Eye Charity.

Moorfields Eye Charity was founded in 2011, but our current existence dates back to 2016 when we merged with another Moorfields charity. We are an independent charity but with close links to Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (Moorfields). Our ambitious strategic aims are set out in our Strategy 2021-2027.

Our objects are the relief of sickness or suffering and the advancement of health. We meet these by improving eye health by funding innovation in research, education and care to benefit Moorfields’ patients. We do this by making grants to Moorfields and to the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. The majority of our grants fund research into eye health, and within that we have an emphasis on building capacity and developing the careers of researchers.

In addition to our ongoing grants programmes, we are working in partnership with Moorfields and UCL to create Oriel, a new world class integrated centre for advancing clinical care, teaching and research. The centre is expected to open in 2027, and will be located near St Pancras in London. In partnership with UCL we are seeking to raise £100m towards the cost of the new centre and world leading research and education in eye health.

As part of planned succession, we are looking to appoint a trustee who will also Chair our Grants committee. The person appointed will initially join our Grants committee, a sub-committee of the Board, as a member, but will then be appointed as a Trustee and Grants committee Chair in Spring/Summer 2024.

We are looking for someone with significant recent experience in strategic grant-making, including programme review, impact assessment and knowledge management. They should have an understanding of the UK scientific research-funding landscape and the commercialisation of scientific research discoveries. They will bring experience of chairing meetings as well as understand and promote good governance practices. It is desirable but not essential to bring a strong understanding of medical research and medical grant funding in particular. As well as a strong commitment to improving the lives of people affected by sight loss, they should have a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort. Importantly, they must have a strong demonstrable commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion.

The committee and the board both meet four times a year (board meetings are held on Monday afternoons). In addition, members may be consulted between meetings. A board awayday is held every other year. Committee chairs are also ex-officio members of the board's Nominations committee which meets twice a year. The total meeting time commitment is c 12 half-days a year.

We are committed to the Charity Governance Code, and in line with its recommendations we are committed to greater diversity on our board and committees. We have set targets for the appointment of trustees with respect to gender, diversity of ethnic background and experience of visual impairment (either personal or of a close family member). We also have an aim to appoint younger trustees (under the age of 40 on appointment).
