**Recruitment Brief**:
The Freedom Festival Arts Trust is at a pivotal point in its 16-year journey. Our current Chair is standing down in March 2024 and we are seeking a new Chair with commercial experience and a love of the arts to join a Board of committed and supportive trustees to bring their skills and expertise to our annual festival and year-round activities.

We’re looking for a confident and creative leader who will act as a passionate advocate and ambassador for Freedom Festival Arts Trust and the city; someone who can articulate our vision, manage our governance and garner support from a wide range of audiences ranging from national and regional political stakeholders, funders, business and our diverse communities in the city.

Our new Chair will support the CEO/Artistic Director (AD), Mikey Martins, and the wider Freedom Festival team to deliver our business plan by leading the charity’s governance processes, and by supporting the wider team to build lasting partnerships in the public, private and third sectors.

The new Chair will be supported by an active Board of Trustees.
- An understanding of the role that the cultural sector has played in the recent economic resurgence of Hull and the wider Humber region since 2017.
- Strong understanding of the business sector in Hull, East Riding and the Humber region.
- Trustee or executive management experience on a cultural, sporting, business, public or not-for profit organisation with and an understanding of governance of charitable organisations.
- An understanding of an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) and our relationship with public funders would be desirable.
- A strong commitment to diversity, inclusivity and sustainability.
- A passion for the role that arts can play in society, particularly for well-being.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- An ability to think strategically, creatively and independently.

**Key responsibilities**:
The Chair will lead Freedom Festival Arts Trust (FFAT) board of trustees to support our business plan and the future growth of the trust. Working closely with the CEO/AD and executive team, this role will involve attending key cultural and networking events whilst also supporting our fundraising and partnership development.

We hold quarterly board meetings, and other subgroup meetings throughout the year. We anticipate an average commitment of around one day a month in a non-executive role.

**Role Description**:

- Chair FFAT’s board meetings, facilitating good decision-making processes (the role may involve chairing/support other sub-committees).
- Advocate for FFAT with key national and regional stakeholders including business, funders and political stakeholders.
- Support FFAT’s CEO/AD and Senior Management Team to deliver its business plan, creating the conditions for the team to thrive.
- Lead on the governance of the charity, supported by the executive team.
- Provide strategic direction and evaluate performance against agreed targets with executive team and core staff.
- Line manage FFAT’s CEO/AD and support FFAT’s effective and efficient administration, and financial stability.
- Advocate for FFAT’s reputation as a key cultural organisation regionally, nationally and internationally.
- Represent FFAT as a spokesperson and at relevant events and meetings.
