The Role

This is a national role and the post sits in our exciting research centre, the National Institute for Health Care Research (NIHR) Innovation Observatory (IO).

The Innovation Observatory is a £27M initiative, funded by the National Institute for Health Care Research, hosted by Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne. We bring together data scientists, researchers in evidence synthesis, and information specialists, to provide timely intelligence data for the NHS and policymakers. Using novel data science and evidence synthesis methods, alongside AI tools and data analytics, together with methodological, clinical and lived experience to collate intelligence and provide insights on health and care innovations that may help shape future health provision.

This is a Full Time, Fixed Term post for 24 months.

Key Accountabilities Take full operational responsibility for development of a commercial programme of work to support the delivery of the IO’s objectives To work with the University Business Development & Enterprise Team to deliver the effective preparation of commercial funding proposals to undertake relevant projects and seek opportunities to exploit IO IP Develop and refine the delivery plan for commercial projects, identifying, monitoring, and managing all relevant risks and issues Support the NIHR Innovation Observatory senior management team to create and deliver a business development plan (reviewed annually) which meets and exceeds the needs of the IO’s commitment to key stakeholders Support the IO Communications & Engagement Coordinator to develop and deliver a communications plan, including events, printed and web-based materials, social media and press reports, which maximise the visibility and impact of project success, supports the co-ordination of inward and outward engagement events, and promotes the IO brand appropriately Supported by the Chief Operating Officer, work with University finance, procurement and the Innovation Observatory senior management team to take responsibility for delivery of complete reporting of project and financial claims in accordance with NIHR requirements and the University’s current practice Ensure that the Innovation Observatory builds and maintains relationships with key external stakeholders, particularly beneficiaries (i.e. NICE, NHS England, Department of Health and Social Care, UKHSA, MHRA ABPI, BIVDA, Industry) encouraging and influencing them to engage with and support the Innovation Observatory activities and its communications and media programme Ensure that the Innovation Observatory is visible across the health sciences ecosystem Ensure the capture and retention of all records in accordance with Stakeholder requirements and University procedures In collaboration with the University Business Development & Enterprise Team support, develop and disseminate good practice in IP and enterprise related activities - supporting the wider IO team to develop relevant knowledge and expertise Act as a representative of the IO in negotiations and relationships with third parties acting at all times in line with University procedures Develop and maintain extensive knowledge of the commercial markets in the life sciences sector

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Demonstrable understanding of project activity, with in-depth knowledge of some specialist areas including consultancy, industry engagement, contracts, project funding, IP, patents, etc.
Understanding of the healthcare regulatory and market access processes, and intellectual property rights
Well-developed analytical and problem solving capability
Ability to communicate clearly on technical issues to non-specialist and senior level audiences
High level planning and organising skills
Ability to persuade, motivate and lead
Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
Well-developed understanding of funding and financial management procedures (Desirable)
Ability to work in teams, across disciplines
Ability to prepare reports and papers for presentation at national and international conferences and meetings
Experience of working within the drug / device / diagnostic / digital regulatory approval process (Desirable)
Ability to learn quickly, adapt and improvise
Be a credible representative for the IO/University in external negotiations
Ability and willingness to work independently in a complex technical and fast moving environment
Experience of preparing business proposals
