Our children’s services volunteers help the charity to deliver essential services in local communities, providing support to over 300,000 children, young people and their families. This role provides a great opportunity to join our fantastic children’s services and help make a real difference. **Befriender Volunteers** work across a range of services, such as children’s centres, parenting services and Child Sexual Exploitation services, supporting children and their families through challenging times in their lives. As a Befriender you will be working with families, on a 1:1 basis, with support of our staff teams to provide support to empower families to make a difference in their lives. Befrienders act as a point of contact for families who are struggling with social isolation, or need help to engage with support services. Big Manchester South a partnership with Barnardo's, Manchester Women's Aid, Manchester MIND and CGL (Change Grow Live) and is funded by the Barnardo's Foundation. It is a child focused family service, providing the whole family with support around the impact of domestic abuse, substance misuse and mental health issues. Big Manchester has two teams across the city, one in the North and one in the South. The project is strengths-based, supporting families longer term between 9-12 months. There are slight differences within the model of the 2 teams, Big Manchester South has the opportunity to offer Befrienders to parents, supporting the work the Family Intervention Worker’s offer. Both North and South team have Family Intervention Worker’s from each partner agency offering support to families where the children are aged 5 to 11 years old. Providing advice, guidance and therapeutic interventions to parents and children helping them understand their past experiences and support them to make positive changes, build resilience and improve parenting, so they have a happier, safer relationships and stronger family bonds. Family Intervention Worker’s also facilitate group work and family school holiday activities. With guidance and support from the Volunteer Coordinator and in collaboration with the intervention workers, Befrienders with Big Manchester South will be carefully matched with a family requiring lower level support. This might be helping to build confidence by listening and being supportive, encouraging family well-being, support with practical tasks, or with accessing services for example. Volunteers do not need any specific qualifications; however, you will need to be able to communicate with children, young people and their parents, from a wide range of backgrounds. It is important to be friendly and welcoming, be open-minded and non-judgemental and have the ability to adapt to the family’s needs We are looking for volunteers, with a passion for making a difference in young people’s lives, with a friendly and approachable attitude and an ability to engage parents/carers and their children, empowering them to take steps towards improving their situation.

- Sharing knowledge and experience about parenting and offering positive solutions to difficult circumstances.
- Establishing trusting relationships with parents facing difficulties managing their roles/lives.
- Providing a listening ear and emotional support to parents in problematic situations.
- Providing information, advice and support to individual families, to enable them to achieve the desired outcomes within their support plan.
