**Job description**:
We have a strong network of more than 50 social across DfT. These are in 3 central teams - Social Research, Behavioural Science, and Evaluation Centre of Excellence - as well as several analytical teams that are embedded in policy directorates.

We are looking for three motivated social researchers to work on high-profile areas that will shape the future of transport policy and investment.

Two of the three roles are based in the Rail Statistics, Research and Evaluation (RSRE) team and one is based in the Evaluation Centre of Excellence. You will work collaboratively with other social researchers and analysts, including economists and statisticians.

**Responsibilities**

As a Senior Research Officer in the DfT you will:

- Support the design, specification, delivery and dissemination of quantitative and qualitative social research and evaluation projects to inform policy priorities.
- Provide quality assurance and analytical scrutiny on social research and evaluation projects and ensure these are focused on delivering insight and evidence on the questions which are most relevant to achieving the department’s objectives.
- Provide technical support and advice to policy colleagues on research methods, including advising on the relative robustness of competing sources of evidence and the interpretation of findings.
- Become an active member of GSR within the department, working with GSR colleagues to find opportunities for cross-cutting work and knowledge sharing.

**Person specification**:
You will have experience of working as a professional social researcher or analyst, with skills in social research, and/or evaluation as per the requirements of the role profile.

We are looking for an organised, motivated, team player who is flexible, able to prioritise your workload and can work well under pressure with a high attention to detail.

You will be someone who can quickly establish a rapport with others and build effective working relationships with many partners to achieve progress on objectives and shared interests.

You will have excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to articulate key messages from analysis to diverse audiences.

If you have not already done so, you must complete the Contract Management Capability Programme and achieve the accreditation at Foundation level, once in the role.

- Qualification route:
- Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree at a minimum of 2:1, or 2:2 with an additional postgraduate degree.
- The degree must include a substantial research methods component, comprising around 30% of the modules taken on the course.

Experience route:
- In addition to the above qualification, applicants must also have at least 4 years’ experience of social research practice, which may consist of working in a research agency, market research agency or a specialist research team.- Any social research modules taken as part of your undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
- Any relevant professional qualifications you hold, such as the MRS Advanced Certificate or equivalent.
