**Job description**:
Transport matters: it doesn’t just help people get around, it helps them get on, and will play a critical role in delivering the Government’s ‘levelling up’ agenda.

We are looking for two motivated Senior Research Officers to work on high-profile areas that will shape the future of transport policy and investment. One of the roles is based in the Aviation, Maritime and Borders Analysis team and the other is based in the High Speed and Major Rail Projects Analysis team.

**Responsibilities include, but not limited to**:

- Design, specify, commission, and deliver social research and evaluation projects to inform transport policies. Engage widely with various customers (policy, analysts, external) to identify evidence needs, shape work and deliver evidence or advice.
- Provide technical support and advice to policy colleagues on research and evaluation methods, including advising on the relative robustness of competing sources of evidence and the interpretation of findings.
- Helping to shape the team’s programme of social research work and helping to embed evaluation activities, as well collaborating with other researchers and analysts within your policy area and across the DfT.
- Become an active member of GSR within the department, working with GSR colleagues to find opportunities for cross-cutting work and knowledge sharing.

**Person specification**:
**About You**

We will require:

- At least two years’ experience working as a professional social researcher or analyst, with required skills in social research, evaluation and data analysis. As per the requirements of Government Social Research Technical Framework - Professional Expertise: Technical skills - Senior Research Officer.
- Experience of translating research or evaluation requirements into robust specifications that meet customer needs.
- Experience of planning, managing and implementing a complex social research or evaluation project to ensure the delivery of robust results on time;
- Experience of using your leadership, communication and collaboration skills to ensure research and/or evaluation has had an impact on decision-making;
- You are required to have skills in social research, evaluation and data analysis as per the requirements of the Government Social Research Technical Framework. Please follow the **GSR Membership & Eligibility Guidance** as this is a requirement for the role.

If you have taken and passed the GSR Knowledge Test within the past 12 months, we may be able to waive the requirement for you to sit the test again. If this is the case, you will be asked to show evidence that you have successfully completed the Knowledge Test, for example by providing confirmation from the hiring manager at the Department where you took the test.

- In addition to the above qualification, applicants must also have at least 4 years’ experience of social research practice, which may consist of working in a research agency, market research agency or a specialist research team.- Any social research modules taken as part of your undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
