Ensure safe and effective handover of patients between East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) and Broomfield Hospital. To be responsible for the day to day co-ordination of ambulance staff in line with EEAST policies and procedures in order to reduce ambulance turnaround times, expedite patient flow and meet contractual requirements. Liaising with the EEAST Tactical Operations Centre (TOC) Duty Tactical Commander, the A&E Nurse in Charge (NIC) and A&E Management team. Ensure that deteriorating or at-risk patients identified by EEAST are appropriately escalated to A&E.

Ensure handover times are recorded on EEAST CAD and that the data capture is timely. Provide A&E intelligence on demand in the community and the anticipated demand this will place on the emergency department. Professional peer challenge on conveyance decisions where alternative care pathways may have been more appropriate. Provide support to ENHT and EEAST during unforeseen surges in ambulance arrivals.

Minimising the overall arrival to clear times for conveying ambulances in order to maximise EEAST availability to patients waiting unassessed in the community. Ensure early escalation in line with EofE Escalation Policy and ENHT Escalation Policy, ensuring completion of all associated actions to create flow at each trigger point based on forecast demand information. Ensure patient safety in the handover area in conjunction with the ambulance handover nurse and NIC. Provide wellbeing support to EEAST staff where required and signpost/escalate issues to the locality management where required.

Provide first-line management support for EEAST staff as required. Provide wellbeing support to ENHT staff where required and signpost/escalate issues to the emergency department management/nurse in charge. Challenge EEAST staff on the mobility levels of presenting patients to maximise streaming options available (Fit 2 Sit). Support workflows to enable ambulance clinicians to direct their patient to the most appropriate destination in ED autonomously as business as usual.

Provide feedback to highlight missing alternative pathways in the community. When appropriate at end of shift (EOS) have oversight of any EOS cohorting required to enable timely finish for EEAST staff and thus minimising waiting times and risk in the community. Act as a Bronze (Operational) commander on site at the hospital when a situation requires (major incident) at the instruction of the Silver (Tactical) commander. Any other duties within the boundaries of the role that are required to support patient safety and delivery of key performance indicators such as the ambulance handover target and emergency 4 hour standard.
