Bsbi Botanical Skills Officer

Belfast, United Kingdom BSBI Full time

Could you help us nurture and develop botanical skills across Northern Ireland and grow
participation in the National Plant Monitoring Scheme?

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to become the Botanical Skills Officer for our Botanical
Skills Training Project in Northern Ireland, thanks to funding from the Department of
Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs (DAERA)’s Environment Fund. The post holder will
deliver a 4.5-year, multi-strand, collaborative programme of botanical training and recording
in Northern Ireland, increase participation and coverage for the National Plant Monitoring
Scheme (NPMS) in NI, and improve quantity and quality of data and flow of plant records.

This role will include the development, trialling, promotion and delivery of plant
identification and recording training courses for different skill levels, taxa and habitats,
with a specific focus on intermediate and expert training and recording. (This work will be
developed in Y1 and expanded in Y2, with onward growth after this through the recruitment of a
specific Training Officer).

The post holder will also work closely with BSBI’s Communications Officer and Head of Science,
along with other NPMS partners (Plantlife, UKCEH, JNCC, DAERA) and coordinators, to facilitate
increased participation and coverage of the National Plant
Monitoring Scheme in NI. Launched in 2015, the National Plant Monitoring Scheme
(NPMS) aims to survey plant species across different habitats in the UK. The data
collected from the survey describes the abundance and diversity of plants and helps us to
understand the health of different habitats. The NPMS was designed and developed by the BSBI, UKCEH, Plantlife
and JNCC.

The post holder will work with the botanical community in NI, including BSBI County Recorders,
to identify and support training and recording needs, and to raise the profile of botany and
BSBI.

Working within our small, friendly staff team who operate remotely across Britain and Ireland,
the post holder would preferably work a hybrid combination between home and the DAERA Offices
in Belfast.

5 year fixed term contract to 31 March 2028
