We are looking to appoint a Research Fellow who will work 100% on this research role for 24 months and have regular contact with, and support of, the Co-Investigator Professor Rohit Shankar, University of Plymouth and Chief Investigators Dr Rebecca Syed Sheriff and Professor Kamaldeep Bhui at University of Oxford.
Based in the Faculty of Health, the Peninsula Medical School aims to attract highly motivated and talented students to become the next generation of future-ready doctors, physician associates and radiographers, who are well prepared for a 21st Century career. Young people will help create an ‘online museum’ as a way of improving their mental health, as part of a new and ground-breaking £2.61m research project hosted by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, led by researchers from Oxford University and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
The project, known as ORIGIN (Optimising cultural expeRIences for mental health in underrepresented younG people onlINe), will run from 2023-2028 and is a collaboration between NHS Trusts, UK universities, and is partnered by museums and charities. The study involves diverse young people aged 16-24 co-designing an online arts and culture intervention aimed at reducing anxiety and depression.
Its effectiveness will then be tested in a trial of nearly 1,500 young people, including some of the most underrepresented young people, specifically LGBTQ+ and autistic young people, ethnic minorities and those who live in some of the most deprived areas of the UK, including Cornwall, Liverpool, Sheffield and Blackpool and those on NHS waiting lists for mental health support.
ORIGIN builds on preliminary research in which an online cultural experience called Ways of Being was co-designed and tested for mental health in young people. Despite limited time and resources in developing Ways of Being, it was enthusiastically received by young people and reduced negative feelings when compared with a traditional museum website.
You will have research interests in critical mental health studies, medical sociology, medical humanities and a strong background in qualitative methods and analysis. You will be committed to co-production, engaging with non-academic partners and to using research with impact. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team and with stakeholders are key requirements, as is the ability to communicate research effectively through a variety of media, including in high quality peer-reviewed publications.
You will also be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, work effectively as part of a team and contribute to the delivery of an ambitious list of public engagement and impact activities. You will have opportunities for contributing to the international profile of our research and scholarship as well as developing your own research trajectory.
