Overview

Bangor University was established in 1884, and currently has over 11,000 students. It comprises 14 Academic Schools grouped into 3 colleges.

Student Services & Administration provides support to students on a range of matters concerned with life as a student. From managing your finances to finding a graduate job, our services are there to help students make the most of their time at university.

The Wellbeing Service is part of the Student Support and Wellbeing Service based within Student Services. We have professionally qualified counsellors, mental health professionals and information specialists that are experienced in helping students to deal with all kinds of practical and emotional issues such as study related matters, trauma, relationships, emotional regulation, mental health disability related issues, accessibility, harassment, inclusion and more.

The Project

Bangor University developed its own in house, one-off, Bystander Intervention training in 2021/22 basing it on the Public Health England open-source Bystander Intervention training, published in 2016. The training session has been tailored to the University and its context and whilst it prioritises sexual violence as the main driver, it also seeks to address other forms of violence and harassment, such as racial abuse and hate crime, recognising the intersecting nature of different personal characteristics on gender-based violence.

The project will strengthen the inclusive community at Bangor, promote equality and provide a long-term enhancement to the work currently being carried out in preventing all forms of harassment. The work is also aligned with the University’s Sexual Violence and Harassment Prevention and Support Strategy.

Purpose of the Job

The Bystander Intervention Training Officer will work with students and staff across the University to foster an understanding of the concept of bystander intervention and its significance as an effective method to reduce incidences of harassment on campus.

Reinforcing work, already carried out over the last three years to facilitate bystander training at Bangor University, the post holder will arrange and deliver the training to all first year undergraduate students.
