The Role

We would like to appoint an enthusiastic Senior Lecturer to lead and develop further, research and teaching in Health Economics. The ideal focus of the post would be applied microeconometics/causal inference in health and care. Other areas of health economics will be considered. As part of this role you will be expected to contribute to curriculum development and the wider academic, scholarly and professional requirements of the Health Economics Group, Institute and the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University.

You will be expected to maintain a strong personal portfolio of research, assist in further developing health economics as part of the Health Economics Group in the Population Health Sciences Institute. You will develop an effective strategy for attracting research funding from major research funders (e.g. National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), ESRC, Wellcome Trust, MRC) to enhance a vibrant research group of post-doctoral and PhD researchers and will engage with and support the research agendas of our regional, national and international collaborations, including the NIHR Health Policy Research Unit in Behaviour Science and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for the North East and North Cumbria.

Key Accountabilities
To contribute to the academic leadership of the Health Economics Group
To develop and lead research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and to an appropriate standard
To develop collaborative links with other researchers working in applied microeconometrics in health and care, locally, nationally and internationally
To lead the development of research proposals and funding bids for prestigious funders (e.g. NIHR, MRC, ESRC), and be successful in obtaining funding
To lead and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment; supervise undergraduate and Masters dissertations and postgraduate research students
Plan and lead high quality research, project managing the research activity, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team. Plan the research to be undertaken, as a self-contained item or as part of a broader programme
To monitor workload and supervise staff who may be working on several projects
To consistently publish in 3 and 4
- rated peer reviewed journals
To present findings at conferences at home and abroad
To develop short courses covering relevant to area of expertise
To undertake teaching of aspects of health economics on the Population Health Sciences Institute’s postgraduate courses
To carry out administrative tasks and other duties to support the Population Health Sciences Institute as required by the Dean of the Population Health Sciences Institute

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Established reputation in health economics with substantial experience in applied microeconometrics in health and care, although other areas of health economics will be considered
Knowledge of the core methodological competencies of health economics
A demonstrated ability to work as part of a research project team and to undertake independent research
Demonstrable capacity to work in a range of education settings and situations
Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect research/personal data according to protocols and principles of good research practice
Ability to establish credability with professionals from a range of disciplines and specialities
Significant experience of preparing research proposals for funding to major research funding organisations (e.g. NIHR, research councils) or for commercial researchas PI and/or in collaboration with others (as co-investigator)
Significant evidence of successful funding awards from major research funding organisations (e.g. NIHR, research councils) or from commercial sources as PI and/or in collaboration with others (as co-investigator)
Able to manage as well as develop a portfolio of high-quality research
A substantial track record of publication in leading national and international peer reviewed journals or demonstration of an industry equivalent e.g. submissions to NICE or other similar bodies
Supervisory experience of earlier career researchers
Evidence of carrying out research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and producing research to an appropriate standard
Experience of presenting findings at national and international conferences
Knowledge, ability, and expertise to lead and contribute to the delivery of undergraduate and post graduate teaching within the Institute and Faculty
