The Role
Newcastle University seeks a creative and innovative immunologist to join in the delivery of internationally competitive research and teaching in immunity and inflammation: a focus on translational and/or preclinical aspects of immunology research is encouraged. As part of this role, you will be expected to contribute to the wider academic, scholarly, and professional requirements of the Institute and the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University.
You will become a senior member of the Immunity and Inflammation Theme and be based in the Translational and Clinical Research Institute which has a rich and diverse group of scientific and clinical investigators. You will be provided with start-up funds, well-appointed laboratory space and access to core platforms and facilities such as flow cytometry (including spectral flow and mass cytometry), genomics, bio-imaging and on-site animal house within the Comparative Biology Centre.
The post-holder will contribute to the provision of teaching and assessment of undergraduate degrees in biomedical sciences and preclinical medicine, as well as taught postgraduate programmes. They will supervise research project students leading to the award of BSc, MRes and PhD degrees.

Key Accountabilities
Contribute to the leadership of research in immunity and inflammation at Newcastle University and build a research team that will be internationally renowned in the field
Drive the development and delivery of cutting-edge research, with the potential to translate to advances in human health
Consistently publish high quality research in internationally respected, peer-reviewed journals
Disseminate research findings through national and international conferences and other avenues
Attract funding for research from a range of peer-reviewed external sources
Develop and sustain an independent research group that operates with a collaborative team-science ethic and in which all team members are recognised and rewarded for their contributions and are provided the opportunity for career advancement
Promote a research culture that encourages and celebrates a rich diversity in its workforce and that upholds the highest standards for its research integrity, data reproducibility and collaborative spirit
Where applicable, generate novel intellectual property and seek to advance that IP for the benefit of clinical research
Lead and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment; supervise undergraduate projects and postgraduate research students, providing pastoral support and guidance when needed
Contribute to the strategic development and implementation of Immunity & Inflammation research in the Institutes, research Themes and Faculty
Promote the national and international profile of the Newcastle University as a centre that is recognised for its translational research on immunology
Undertake other tasks as may be required by the Dean of the Translational and Clinical Research Institute

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
A strong background in immunology research, with a preferred focus on translational and/or preclinical approaches
Track record of success in bidding for and attracting research funding, appropriate for career stage
Excellent record of publications suitable for REF submission
Ability to carry out high quality research within agreed timelines
Experience of leading and/or contributing to the delivery of, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in immunology or related areas
Knowledge of research ethics, good research practice and research governance
Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including presentations to academic/non-academic audiences, written outputs)
