The Royal Free London's award-winning communications team is continually rising to the challenges the NHS faces by delivering crucial information to those who work with us, or rely on our services.

We keep 35,000 members fully informed and updated, as well as 480 key stakeholders, including staff, governors, MPs, councillors, NHS partners, GPs, primary care colleagues, integrated care systems, health scrutiny committees, patients, carers, and the media.

We operate in a very busy environment, across a wide range of sites and services where team members spend their working days.

Maintaining positive relationships with local GPs and other primary care providers is key to the success of the Royal Free London. This is a unique opportunity to improve the experience of our primary care colleagues across the regions we serve and beyond.

We’re looking to appoint somebody who will play an integral part in ensuring our primary care colleagues feel their views are represented throughout the organisation and are updated on what is happening across the trust.

You will also play a part in ensuring the Royal Free London’s story is shared with our external stakeholders and other key partners.

You will be required to work closely with colleagues from all levels of the organisation, as well as other team members to deliver engaging, clear and concise information across the trust’s established GP platforms and our broader communications channels.

More than 190 years ago, surgeon William Marsden came across a penniless woman dying from disease on the steps of a London church. Outraged by the injustice of her death, William was inspired to open the Royal Free Hospital to provide free healthcare to those who couldn’t afford medical treatment. This was the foundation on which the NHS would be built 120 years later.

It was the only hospital to remain open during the cholera epidemics in 1832 (when the title ‘Royal’ was granted), 1849 and 1854. In 1887 it became the first hospital in London to accept women to train as doctors.

In 2012 we were awarded foundation trust status and two years later the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust acquired Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals before leading the UK response to the Ebola epidemic. In 2017 we launched the Royal Free London group, before opening the new Chase Farm Hospital.

In February 2020 we were one of the first hospitals in the NHS to receive the first COVID-19 patients in the UK. We’re incredibly proud of how our staff responded during the pandemic and their efforts were showcased in the Bafta-nominated BBC documentary Hospital which was filmed at our trust.

Today, we’re a large NHS foundation trust, employing more than 11,000 staff and serving a population of more than 1.6 million people across north London and Hertfordshire.

We continue to lead improvements in healthcare and are proud to have some of the best clinical outcomes in the country and a leading role in research.
