Overview / Responsibilities:
Wood is currently seeking expression of interest for a Technical Author.

Responsibilities include:

- Ensures the quality of all documents produced under their jurisdiction
- Prioritises own workload. Co-ordinates activities between clients and relevant in-house departments to ensure that any work under their jurisdiction is produced to the specified standard, agreed deliverables and budget
- Adheres to clear file structures and manages electronic files, ensuring an auditable, electronic trail for all work undertaken
- Provides tracking and reporting progress and costs throughout the life of a project
- Maintains job-specific and company records in an appropriate and timely manner
- Planning and Analysis
- Identify objectives of document
- Identify who the document is for (audience) and in what scenario (when and where will peopel use the document)
- Identify standards and legislation that applies
- Identify vocabulary and style for audience, language, tense, person, terminology, including Plain English and Human Factors
- Identify if the final document is to be translated, if so consider use of controlled vocabulary
- Research and Organise
- Research and retrieve information, including design documents, drawings, rough notes, presentations, interviews (recorded if necessary) and existing documents
- Filter information for applicability
- Create structure of document to ensure that there will be a logical flow to the information presented
- Structure to expose the content to the readers, not hide it
- Heading levels to reflect importance of topics
- Where required, develop synopsis for document contents (brief summary of content against each heading)
- Technical Authoring
- Identify and commission diagrams and graphics to support and supplement text
- Check the completed graphics for accuracy and completeness
- Produce draft document, using a template where available, written consistently and in accordance with the agreed scope
- Incorporate diagrams and graphics as necessary
- Liaise with the reviewer/approver through the agreed draft stages to finalisation and issue
- Document Production
- Ensure that independent Quality Control checks are carried out on the document at a predetermined stage
- Liaise with Production staff regarding final deliverables (electronic files, hard copy, binders, divider cards etc)
- Provide Technical Authoring expertise for the revision of existing documents
- Interpret reviewer’s comments and revise document accordingly, including merging and consolidating two or more documents, restructuring, incorporation of additional material and writing of new material
- Unless instructed otherwise, ensure consistency with existing document style, language, tense and person

- Experience of working to tight deadlines
- Demonstrable job co-ordination and administration skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office packages

- Integration of components of a technical publication, including the preliminary pages (foreword etc), sections, chapters, content, appendices/addenda, and supplementary components

- Coordination of the development of a new version of a technical publication
- Evaluation of the effectiveness of a technical publication
- Obtaining and providing advice and information relating to a technical publication
- Contribute to the design of a technical publication
- Knowledge of the production process required for each project, the timeframes involved and any potential problems
