**Job summary**:
In the Defra group, we deal with a vast range of issues that profoundly impact on people’s lives. We are responsible for England’s environment, our countryside and rural economy, the food and farming sectors and have lead responsibility for protection from a wide range of natural threats and hazards. Your role will be critically important to achieving our vision of ‘creating a great place for living’.

As a Senior Policy Advisor, you will be part of a team who work with a range of both internal and external stakeholders. You will contribute towards the drafting of policy and strategy.

You will play an active role in shaping and delivering the Defra group’s priorities, working creatively and collaboratively with others to deliver excellent outcomes.

Defra’s profile has never been higher; our remit provides the opportunity for real influence. You will be building relationships with a variety of key stakeholders. Internally, these could include Directors and Ministers, as well as your counterparts in other teams. Externally, this could include industry bodies, non-governmental organisations and UK citizens.

Agri-Food Chain Roles

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Agri-Food Chain Directorate in Defra.

The Directorate leads on a diverse and exciting range of food and farming policy, working closely with industry, academia, the voluntary sector and consumer groups, as well as almost every other Whitehall department. The Covid pandemic has demonstrated more clearly than ever before how critical an effective food chain is to our existence and well-being.

While continuing to respond to the current challenges to the farming and food systems, we are also developing new policies for UK food and farming to make the most of our opportunities as an independent, sovereign state by improving the innovation, productivity and economic performance of our domestic industries. We want to make the UK the best in the world when it comes to maintaining the confidence of consumers, high food standards and innovative, sustainable food production in a way that fits the Government’s commitment to achieve Net Zero in 2050. We need to find the right ways to make the UK a great place to start and thrive as a farming or food and drink business; and ensure that our food and drink businesses can deliver high quality food and drink to more markets worldwide.

Working as a policy professional in the Farming and Primary Processing Division with the Agri-Food Chain Directorate, you will be helping to create, support and deliver one of a range of policies covering the areas of fertilisers, horticulture or marketing standards.

**Job description**:
**We are recruiting 3 roles across fertilisers, horticulture and marketing standards**:
**1. Fertiliser policy**

Fertiliser use directly supports an estimated 50% of globally produced edible protein. Fertilisers provide essential nutrients for crops, but effective use is one of the biggest challenges of our time as a reliance on energy intensive mineral fertiliser and over-use causes significant water, air and soil pollution, and impacts negatively on biodiversity and climate change. Rising gas prices and the Ukraine invasion have pushed up the price of mineral fertilisers and caused production to reduce, creating supply issues and increased financial pressure on farmers.

In this role you will lead Defra’s work to monitor the volatile fertiliser supply and price issues, and help drive forward cross-government initiatives to bolster resilience and support farmers, all whilst upholding Defra’s environmental commitments. This is a high interest area with many moving parts.

Responsibilities may include:

- Ensuring Defra has sufficient data (this may include commissioning new research and analysis) and interpreting the evidence to ensure there is a clear and consistent narrative of the situation as it evolves
- Working with a range of internal and external stakeholders to build a shared understanding of the situation
- Identifying possible options for government intervention and developing policy accordingly
- Management of 1 HEO

**2. Horticulture**

Following the recent No.10 Food Summit, supporting an expansion of horticulture i
