**Job summary**:
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the UK government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, and sustaining a thriving rural economy. Our broad remit means we play a major role in people's day-to-day life, from the food we eat, and the air we breathe, to the water we drink.
- Strategy Directorate_

We are recruiting an SEO role in our central team in the Policy Acceleration Unit (PAU). This role is in the Policy Acceleration Unit and Policy Profession Team within the Strategy Directorate.

Strategy is a fast-paced, dynamic, and challenging environment. Our purpose is to give a high quality and timely service to Ministers and the Permanent Secretary, and to ensure that Defra group is able to achieve the strategic objectives we set out in our Business Plan.

We work in support of Defra’s strategic objectives, look at how we can join up with other initiatives across the organisation to get things done, support each other to deliver excellent work, help Defra to make good decisions and we identify and unblock barriers to change.

Defra’s Policy Acceleration Unit (PAU) was set up in summer 2023 to accelerate the delivery of the Departments top policy priorities. This is an exciting new unit changing the way Defra identifies, prioritises and responds to priority policy areas. It is comprised of 26 policy professionals. PAU team members are deployed on a 3-6-month basis to projects across Defra, which are identified through a regular bidding cycle. It is a high profile, fast paced team with a strong focus on learning and development.
- Encouraging diverse applicants_

**Location**

This role can be based at any Main Defra Policy Hub (Bristol, London or York and Newcastle). Due to the nature of the work, it is only available on a full-time basis.

**Job description**:
You will support** **the Head of the PAU (G6), lead on elements of the bidding process and engage with SCS to ensure the PAU delivers on the top priorities and drives meaningful change across the department. You will also build trusting relationships with key teams to improve our broader understanding of Defra’s priorities and improve the PAU model. This includes Defra Secretary of State’s Delivery Unit and potentially other XWH priority units.

Importantly, you will be a central leader for our PAU team deployed in postings. You will work across the team’s corporate groups to set, drive and achieve strategic goals.

We are looking for a motivated, adaptable self-starter who can get to grips with the workings of a new unit quickly. You will be confident to work independently and take forward projects that shape how the PAU works.

This role is a blend of strategy, stakeholder management and coordination. It will be a stretching, high profile role that gives a unique insight into Defra’s top priorities and our departmental policy profession.

There is a strong focus on learning and development in the unit and our training offer will also be available to the successful post holder. For example, we deliver a bespoke training offer during decompression week (our transition week between PAU placements).

**Person specification**:
**Responsibilities**
- Working closely with the corporate Bidding Group and Head of PAU to lead and coordinate the PAU bidding process. This will include working with Private Office, critically assessing the suitability of bids received, and making recommendations about which bids to accept to the PAU G6/ SCS.
- Supporting the PAU Oversight Board, a governance board comprised of nominated Directors and DDs. This may include producing briefings, delivering presentations and providing a secretariat function.
- Working closely with the Head of the PAU to support the day to day functioning of the PAU. This includes supporting the design of our long-term model and strategic approach.
- Build and maintain trusting stakeholder relationships with key teams to improve our understanding of Defra’s priorities and identify opportunities to learn from other PAU models.
- Coordinating across the 4 PAU corporate groups to set and achieve key milestones including delivering decompression week activities.
- Act as the main link between the Policy Profession
