University Hospitals of Leicester has an exciting opportunity for 10 Trainee Clinical Coders to join our professional Clinical Coding team.

To succeed in this role you must be motivated, enthusiastic and possess an eye for detail. You will have good knowledge of anatomy and physiology and excellent written and verbal communication skills as the role involves working with all levels of staff across the hospital trust. As well as having excellent organisational and interpersonal skills you will need to be flexible in your approach and have an appreciation of the confidential nature of the work. The ability to work under pressure and independently is also a requirement of this role.

You will report to the Clinical Coding Manager and promote team working across the trust, helping to create an environment where innovative ideas for service improvement are actively encouraged and implemented.

Selected applicants will be invited to sit a coding aptitude test. Successful applicants will then be invited for an interview.

To extract and analyse clinical information and medical terminology as written in patient case notes by clinicians. These describe a patient’s complaint, problem, diagnosis, treatment or reason for seeking medical attention and require translating by the post holder into the most appropriate coded format which is nationally and internationally recognised. The resulting coding information is critical for:

- Audit of the Trust’s clinical effectiveness
- Epidemiological analysis for Public Health planning
- Ensuring appropriate financial flows
- Correct income for the Trust from National Tariff Payment System (PbR)
- The basis of the commissioning process

Undertake the Clinical Coding Standards Course and post course assessment written examination. To maintain a high standard of timeliness and accuracy when Clinical Coding. Entering coded clinical details on to the Trust’s Patient Administration System (Medicode).

As part of the Trust Clinical Coding Team, currently 48 WTEs provide cover for colleagues in times of annual leave or sickness absence to ensure continuity of work and also participate in induction and training of new team members. Coding office are bases at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield & Leicester General Hospitals.

Take responsibility for ensuring patient information that you handle is always kept confidential, within a secure environment, and only referenced for the purpose of conducting your duties.

Participate in Coding Team meetings, liaising with coding colleagues on agreed implementation of local variation to coding rules and all proposed changes to coding practice. Ensure effective team working with other members of the clinical directorates and IM&T ensuring skills and knowledge are transferred as appropriate, ensure working procedures are properly documented and maintained.

Under supervision develop key business relationships within the CMG’s to ensure clinical engagement with the divisional stakeholders. Under supervision be the link to the CMG’s ensuring that the coder/clinician linkage is effective and attending all necessary business/governance meetings
