Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Emergency

We are looking for a registered healthcare professional (Nurse, Paramedic, ODP, pharmacist, physiotherapist etc) with an interest in emergency general surgery and SDEC (same day emergency care) to fulfil the role of Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) in our surgical triage unit.

The surgical triage unit is responsible for the rapid assessment and treatment of patients with emergency surgical conditions. We take referrals from a variety of sources including GP practices and the emergency department. The triage team includes ward clerks, healthcare assistants, registered nurses, junior doctors, specialist registrars and SDEC consultants.

As a trainee ACP undertake a period of supervised practice working towards becoming an integral member of the existing triage team with an agenda to push forward SDEC in general surgery and the advanced practice role. You will receive protected training and academic time and have opportunities to undertake research and clinical audit. You will be supported through the training programme by the current general surgical ACP and a dedicated SDEC consultant mentor.

During this period of training, you will be encouraged to work with qualified ACPs and medical professionals from different specialties (as well as those in general surgery) to improve your underpinning knowledge and assist you to comprehensively undertake history taking, examination, and assessment, formulate diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatments.

The post will have the primary location of the Surgical Triage Unit but may extend into other areas of general surgery at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. There may be opportunities for rotations into other surgical specialties such as colorectal and upper gastrointestinal surgery.

You will be expected to participate in a wide range of advanced clinical skills following appropriate training and completion of competency assessments. These skills should include advanced life support, venepuncture and cannulation, female and male catheterisation and arterial and venous blood gas sampling. You will receive appropriate training to interpret results such as blood tests, blood gases, imaging and ECGs. You may also have the opportunity to train to undertake surgical skills such as the draining of abscesses.
