**Research Assistant**: £29,619 to £31,411 per annum
**Research Associate**: £32,348 to £42,155 per annum

The Role
The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Newcastle University is seeking to recruit an ambitious Research Assistant/Associate in Statistics to work on EPSRC-funded project "Harnessing the Power of Stein Discrepancy in Bayesian Computation". The project is Professor Chris Oates and aims to develop novel and powerful algorithms for statistical computation.
You will join the growing Statistics Group at Newcastle University, which has wider expertise in Bayesian modelling, computation, and Machine Learning. You will also have the opportunity to interact with The Alan Turing Institute and the National Innovation Centre for Data. Generous funds are available for travel and training.

Key Accountabilities
**The main duties and responsibilities are as follows**:
Design novel algorithms for Bayesian computation.
Conduct theoretical and empirical algorithmic assessment.
Present research outputs to scientific and non-scientific audiences, in written and oral form.
Contribute to the positive culture and general strengths of the research group and the School; for example, through supervision of project students, organising/ participating in research events, as well as participation in outreach and initiatives to promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
Any other duties that may be required from time to time, commensurate with the grade of the post.
As part of our commitment to career development for research staff, the University has developed 3 levels of research role profiles. These profiles set out firstly the generic competences and responsibilities expected of role holders at each level and secondly the general qualifications and experiences needed for entry at a particular level.
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Experience in theoretical and/or computational aspects of Statistics, Mathematics, Machine Learning, or a closely related field
A track record of high quality research outputs related to the goals of the project (e.g., publications, software, research tools etc.), commensurate with stage of career
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write research publications, and to effectively communicate results to the scientific community
A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career
High level analytical and problem-solving capability
Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings and working on joint research projects
Attributes and Behaviour
Ability to work independently using own initiative and to meet deadlines
Ability to set own research goals, be self-motivated and proactive
Commitment to the values of equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of your work
Desirable
An interest in the (co-)supervision of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students
Demonstrable commitment to promoting a positive and healthy research culture (e.g., by actively supporting/mentoring students, supporting initiatives to improve the work environment etc.)
**Qualifications**:
PhD awarded (or be nearing completion) in a relevant discipline or exceptionally equivalent professional experience
Honours Degree in a relevant discipline
