The appointee will report directly to the academics at Bangor University and liaise with the other partner organisations as and when required. Duties will mainly involve evaluating the success of public health messaging associated with the programme, the ethics of different surveillance approaches, links to other public health and wellbeing metrics in Wales.

Wastewater can be used for the surveillance of a range of diseases (e.g. influenza, norovirus, monkeypox, covid-19), illicit drug use, alcohol consumption as well as providing information on other indicators of human health and societal wellbeing. We are looking to recruit a Research Assistant to help support the programme, the research team and the dissemination of its results. The project is being led by Bangor University (Prof. Davey Jones) in collaboration with Cardiff University and Public Health Wales.

Applications will also be considered to carry out this role on a part-time or job share basis. However, the sum of the part time/job share contracts must equal 1 FTE.

The School of Natural Sciences conducts world-leading research and teaching across a diverse range of topics including zoology, biology, forestry, geography, agriculture and conservation. The Project

The project aims to evaluate how wastewater can be used for public health surveillance in Wales. Wastewater can be used for the surveillance of a range of diseases (e.g. influenza, norovirus, monkeypox, covid-19), illicit drug use, alcohol consumption as well as providing information on other indicators of human health and societal wellbeing. We are looking to recruit a Research Assistant to help support the programme, the research team and the dissemination of its results. The project is being led by Bangor University (Prof. Davey Jones) in collaboration with Cardiff University and Public Health Wales.

Purpose of the Job

This is a 6-month Research Assistant position, funded by Welsh Government. The project aims to evaluate how wastewater can be used for public health surveillance in Wales. Wastewater can be used for the surveillance of a range of diseases (e.g. influenza, covid-19), illicit drug use, alcohol consumption as well as providing information on other indicators of human health and societal wellbeing. We are looking to recruit a social scientist to investigate public perception to wastewater surveillance and the ethical issues surrounding its deployment at national scale. The project will also investigate the best methods to communicate the findings of the national surveillance programme to stakeholders. We are also interested in evaluating the cost-effectiveness of wastewater-based surveillance in comparison to other monitoring approaches (e.g. laboratory testing in hospitals) and potential savings in terms of reducing the disease burden in society. Collectively, this information will be used by Public Health Wales and Welsh Government to guide future policy and public health initiatives.

**Responsibilities**:

- Co-design, implement and analyse questionnaires relating to the perceptions and ethics of using wastewater to monitor public health in Wales.- Undertake semi-structured interviews with stakeholders about the barriers and opportunities associated with the use of wastewater for public health surveillance in Wales.- Collate economic data on the cost of different approaches for monitoring public health in Wales.- Prepare material and results from the project for entry into quarterly reports for Welsh Government- Participation in research group meetings- Help write research papers with the wider teamOther
