Overview

The city of Bangor is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty close to the mountains of Snowdonia and the beach resorts of the North Wales coast, and offers a quality of life that surpasses that in most regions of the UK. Lying on the Euroroute to Ireland, Bangor is served by fast train services to most major cities and excellent road connections via the A55 expressway to the motorway network. Manchester and Liverpool airports are within 90 minutes away by car.

Bangor University was established in 1884 and currently has over 11,000 students. It comprises 14 Academic Schools grouped into 3 colleges. The College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at Bangor University is one of the leading centres in the UK for teaching and research in biology, environmental sciences, geography, ocean sciences, chemistry, computer science and electronic engineering.

The college has over 2300 students and 350 teaching and support staff, and consists of three academic schools and the BioComposites Centre. The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering is a school within this College. The School achieved the UK’s fourth highest score for its Electronic Engineering research output in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), acknowledging the world leading research activity carried out in the School. These articulate in the fields of Photonics (optoelectronics, optical system and communications), and Material and Devices (smart materials, organic and green electronics, device fabrication and characterization).

The Project

The Optical Communications Research Group (OCRG) in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, Bangor University, has established its world-wide reputation in research in access networks (optical and wireless) and digital signal processing (DSP). By making use of the OCRG’s DSP research capability, an innovative-minded DSP Centre of Excellence was created in September 2019 in Bangor University, by involving a number of globally leading industrial partners with a well-balanced and skill-complementary expertise. At present, the DSP Centre has 34 high-calibre staff and is equipped with a £5.5m state-of-the-art research facilities and world-leading real-time FPGA-based testbeds.

The DSP Centre develops cutting-edge DSP solutions for 5G and beyond as well as their ecosystems with a sharp focus on not only further improving its research capacity but also capturing more research grants from both public and private funding sources. The DSP Centre is pursuing the following technically and logically-linked RD&I projects including:

- i) DSP algorithm design, optimisation and implementation;
- ii) Flexible transceivers and networking devices;

iii) Optical and wireless transmission system convergence;
- iv) Cloud network architectures;
- v) SDN-based network control;
- vi) 5G and beyond testbed establishment and field trials;

vii) Optical wireless communications (underwater, terrestrial) and LiFi; and

viii) 5G and beyond broadband connection-enabled user services.

The scheme was initially part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government, EU Funds: Investing in Wales, it is now part-funded a Welsh Government-funded broadband delivery project, UKRI funded research projects and a DASA funded prototype development project. The Centre’s long-term sustainability is envisaged to be maintained by capturing further research funding and commercialising the Centre-generated DSP solutions.
